Stranger Things season 4: New evidence Hopper is alive revealed in Joyce Byers clue?

Stranger Things fans have been eager to know if Hopper (played by David Harbour) really is “The American” after many theories began to circulate that the prisoner referred to in the Post-credit scene could be him. Could Hopper have somehow escaped the Starcourt Mall explosion? One fan thinks he has after spotting a major clue from Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder).

While the identity of the mysterious “American” under wraps for now, many fans speculate it could be Hopper.

Viewers immediately picked up on the fact that showunners never showed the Police Chief’s body after the blast.

Now it seems the beloved character really could have escaped death after fans spotted a major clue in Joyce Byers’ reaction to the explosion.

Reddit user gabbiegabbie picked up on something interesting after rematching the finale episode.

  • Stranger Things season 4: Bob Newby exposed as undercover agent?

She began: “So I was rewatching the latest episode and thought to myself ‘we didn’t see Hopper die but Joyce did and she would have known if he was still alive’

“But, Joyce was closing her eyes when she shut down the machine and didn’t open them until Hopper was already supposedly dead.”

Could Joyce have missed something big?

Other users began to comment, speculating that the entire explosion scene was edited in a way to leave Hopper’s fate a mystery.

One user added: “The way the scene is cut is meant to do exactly that- make us think he might have gotten out but… maybe didn’t.

“The cut to black for dramatic effect also mirrors Joyce’s eyes being shut- she doesn’t see it = we don’t see it… She thinks he is dead = we think he is dead.”

However, the fan did pick up on the fact that Joyce never called out to him during the explosion.

What could this mean?
