Tragic scenes lay ahead for Paddy (Dominic Brunt) as the weight of his depression becomes too much and he makes plans to end his own life in Emmerdale.
He caused concern recently by taking off without a word, spurring his nearest and dearest to embark on a huge search and calling on the police to help. They tracked him down to a B&B but he didn’t want to be found.
After a fruitless search and struggling not to abandon all hope, the family is shocked when Paddy walks back through the door with his overnight bag. Marlon (Mark Charnock) is a mixture of emotions, both seething and relieved all at once. Chas (Lucy Pargeter) has less sympathy and is merely irritated at what Paddy has put them through, paying no mind to what she’s put him through as well.
It seems like a joyous occasion to have him back, but there is a dark reason behind his return.
Bear (Joshua Richards) arrives to reunite Paddy with Eve and it’s tears all round, and Chas can finally see the hurt and sadness in Paddy’s eyes.
Paddy shares his delight at being home and his happiness at being reunited with his family. But when Marlon leaves him alone, it becomes clear this was all a ruse. Paddy is a numb shell of himself.
He goes about his day and from the outside for those not choosing to look more deeply, it appears he’s making amends. In truth, he’s made a terrible decision and his pleasant chats are really goodbyes.
He prepares a letter for Bear and leaves.
Bear is horrified to discover the note and jumps into action while Marlon is helpless when he has to stay behind. It’s now become clear what Paddy intends to do.
But there’s worse news ahead – Rhona (Zoe Henry) reveals the bolt gun from the vet surgery has gone missing. Not only does Paddy have a plan, he has the means. It’s the final confirmation they need, an utterly broken Paddy is gearing up to take his own life.
They spring into action in a desperate bid to find him, but if Paddy doesn’t want to be found, is it already too late?
