The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse will be airing this evening on BBC One at 4.55pm. The animated film is based on Charlie Mackesy’s book of the same name and has been described by the BBC as a “story of kindness, friendship, courage and hope for viewers of all ages”. Here’s a look at the stellar voice cast of The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse.

Who is in the cast of The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse?

The Boy – Jude Coward Nicoll

Actor Jude Coward Nicoll brings life to The Boy in the film, who will be at the heart of the story.

Nicoll has previously starred in Tom & Jerry: The Movie and The Lost Sock but The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse will be his biggest role to date.

The Mole – Tom Hollander

Tom Hollander voices The Mole and is best known for his performances in The Night Manager, Pride and Prejudice, The Pirates of the Caribbean and In the Loop.

More recently, he’s featured in BBC series Us, The White Lotus on HBO, Feud: Better and Joan, The Ipcress File and the Harley Quinn series.

The Fox – Idris Elba

Hollywood star Idris Elba takes on the voice of The Fox and is no stranger to screens with some of his biggest projects including Luther, The Wire, Beasts of No Nation, Thor: Ragnarok and Pacific Rim.

He has a raft of upcoming projects including voicing Knuckles in Sonic the Series, Hijack and the forthcoming Luther movie which will be airing on Netflix in 2023.

The Horse – Gabriel Byrne

Veteran Hollywood actor Gabriel Byrne lends his voice to The Horse and is known for The Usual Suspects, Hereditary, End of Days and Miller’s Crossing.

Byrne has also appeared in Lost Girls, the Netflix series Maniac, Vikings, the movie Vampire Academy and War of the Worlds.

Speaking about Byrne’s cast, Mackesy said: “I love Gabriel and I love his voice.”

He went on to tell the Irish Times: “My dad was Irish. I loved the Irish relationship with horses and always felt the horse should be Irish.”

Byrne and Mackesy had a call with the actor thrilled to be taking on the role of the Horse.

Macksey admitted he “laughed and cried”, thanking Byrne for agreeing to come on board.

Mackesy originally started posting his drawings on Instagram and one of his pictures resonated with people around the world.

He previously worked as a Spectator cartoonist and book illustrator before embarking on his new career thanks to Instagram.

Interestingly, each of the animals represents a different part of a person with the boy who is always asking questions about the world; a reticent fox; a mole who loves cake; and a wise horse who offers up kernels of wisdom.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse was first published in 2019 and broke the record for spending the most consecutive weeks in the Sunday Times Non-Fiction Chart.

Additionally, the book was a New York Times best-seller with readers around the world discovering the story.

Mackesy said on his official site: “The journey of making the film of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse with my ridiculously talented and kind animation team has been a magical one.

“It’s so great to think the story will be in the nation’s homes this Christmas – and I really hope it helps bring comfort, love and laughter.”
