Get Gotti

John Gotti was one of the most notorious mafia bosses in American history. During the 1980s, as boss of the Gambino crime family, this flamboyant figure became the most powerful man in New York – a ruthless and ambitious leader who had ordered the execution of his own boss, Paul Castellano, in order to complete his remarkable rise to power.

For years, law enforcement was desperate to find a way of bringing Gotti down, and they eventually managed it in 1992, when he was convicted of five murders and other crimes, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Gotti’s rags-to-riches story and his dramatic downfall are explored in this fascinating three-part documentary series.

Pluto

The arrival of Pluto is a big deal for fans of manga and Japanese anime. This action-packed eight-part series is based on the classic 1960s comic book and cartoon Astro Boy, and the more recent manga series Pluto, which ran from 2003 to 2009. It’s set in a futuristic world where humans and robots live together in something approaching harmony. However, when a series of robots are destroyed, robot detective Gesicht and advanced robot boy Atom uncover a threat to the whole world.

It’s off to Sweden for this blackly funny six-part comedy-drama, which packs a strong emotional punch. When 27-year-old Tore (William Spetz, who also created and wrote the series) is blindsided by the sudden and violent death of the most important person in his life, he sets out to do whatever he can to suppress his grief.

While managing to hold down his day job at his father’s funeral home, aimless and immature Tore spends his nights throwing himself into partying, indulging in sex, drugs and alcohol for the very first time.

It doesn’t take long, however, for his best friend Linn (Sanna Sundqvist) and his colleagues to start worrying about his wellbeing.

The Enfield Poltergeist

It’s the most famous poltergeist haunting in history. In 1977 the Hodgsons (including daughter Margaret), and ordinary family living in a semi-detached house in Enfield, London, reported inexplicable noises and objects being moved violently inside their home.

Soon, the Press had picked up the story,  cementing the haunting’s place in  paranormal history. This meticulously  put-together four-part documentary tells the story of the so-called Enfield Poltergeist, using a re-created house and actors lip-syncing to genuine tape recordings made by investigator Maurice Grosse during his many visits at the time of the haunting.

There are also  interviews with the family’s cousin and neighbour Paul.

Milli Vanilli

Back in  1989, French/German pop duo Milli Vanilli –  aka Fabrice ‘Fab’ Morvan and Robert ‘Rob’ Pilatus – saw their first album go six times platinum in the US. Their single Girl You  Know It’s True sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and in 1990 they won a Grammy for Best New Artist.

But their dream turned nightmarish when it emerged that Rob and  Fab hadn’t sung a single note on their records or at gigs. This documentary recounts their tragic tale – as told by surviving member Fab – and asks who the real villains were.

Anyone who’s had children in the last 25 years is sure to be familiar with The Wiggles. Since first appearing in the 1990s, this colourful Australian music group has kept millions of pre-schoolers entertained with their infectious songs and zany skits.

Now their remarkable  story is told in a heart-warming documentary, which reveals how the group was formed in 1991 by four friends, and charts their meteoric rise all the way to today, when three of the four have retired but watch over the latest line-up. Beaut, mate!

Richard Hammond's workshop

Two years ago, The Grand Tour’s Richard set up The Smallest Cog, a classic-car restoration workshop near his Herefordshire home with  father-and-son-mechanic duo Neil and Anthony Greenhouse.

As series three begins, work is busier than ever and the team – aka  the Cogs – has expanded. This week, Richard’s feeling particularly excited, as the squad are taking on the restoration of a true French  classic: a unique Delahaye sports car originally built in 1947 for iconic Grand Prix superstar Louis Chiron.

Yet amid all the smiling faces and piles of orders, Richard does wonder: “Have I taken too much on?”

It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

For Charlie Brown obsessives, Halloween can mean only one thing: the classic short film It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. This glorious special – in which, Charlie, Linus, Lucy, Snoopy and co-celebrate the spooky season – has been delighting kids young and old since 1966.

Now we have the change to enjoy it all over again, joining Charlie and Lucy as they go trick-or-treating, and Linus as he waits for the Great Pumpkin to appear.
