The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies trailer
The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies star Rebekah Stanton explained why she didn’t speak to real-life victims of con artists as she opened up about her role in the BBC thriller.
This drama tells the story of two very different women, Alice Newman (played by Rebekah Stanton) and Cheryl Harker (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and the conman, Dr Rob Chance (Alistair Petrie), that they have in common.
Cheryl is a bestselling fantasy fiction author who, after being recently bereaved, now lives alone with her poodle, Goblin.
Alice is a formidable but long-underestimated PA who lives in a bungalow with her young son and partner.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Rebekah touched on the subject of real-life con victims and explained why she herself didn’t speak to any while researching the role.

“Well, I think what the script does so brilliantly, is it makes us as the audience think about what it is to feel confused, what it feels to be lied to, to not know what is true and what is false,” the actress detailed.
She continued: “So, actually, on this occasion, I didn’t make that choice, because I think Alice is quite a unique character.
“And also, I’m not sure many victims would have found themselves quite in the circumstances she finds herself.”

Speaking in March, the actress talked about how relatable she felt her character is.
“From the moment I read the script, I connected with Alice’s journey, the feeling of being a woman in her forties who doesn’t feel that she’s shown yet what she’s fully capable of.
“I connected with her vulnerability and when I read about that early relationship with Rob and how it had made Alice feel, I connected to the idea that you hope that person is going to be able to look after you, and in Alice’s case he disappears completely and abandons her with more problems than she had when she met him.”
Detailing her thoughts touching on how men are so often believed over women, Rebekah continued: “I think predominantly for Alice her biggest fear, possibly because of her class and also Rob’s effect on her, is that she will not be believed.
“Alice believes that. That’s what she takes into her journey that as a woman, people are going to look at her and think she is mad.
“There’s a lot of doubt, so I think female viewers are possibly going to relate to that and I do think it will trigger the question in people: ‘will she be believed?’ I think that’s relatable.”
The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies will launch with weekly episodes on BBC One from August 29. All episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer.
