The Gold has been keeping viewers gripped since it started airing last month with audiences intrigued by the biggest heist in the world, where three tonnes of gold worth £26million was stolen from a west London security depot. The six-part series is based on real events but features a mix of fact and fiction for dramatic effect. The show has been airing weekly but was also available as a boxset on the BBC iPlayer, here are the key points from the finale called I’ll Be Remembered.
What happened at the end of The Gold?
John Palmer got off from the crime
Brian Boyce (played by Hugh Bonneville) confronted John Palmer (Tom Cullen) and told him he knew the criminal had been smelting the stolen Brink’s-Mat gold and selling it back to the market, running the proceeds through his business.
Boyce said he had the paperwork against Palmer but the gangster wasn’t so sure, saying the trail wouldn’t lead back to him because his name wasn’t on any of the documents needed to prove his guilt.
Palmer managed to convince the jury he didn’t know about the gold and where it was from, managing to get off for his involvement in Brink’s-Mat.
John went on to Spain to deal with all the money the sales of the gold had made, while his wife Marnie (Stefani Martini) was left unimpressed by his decision.
Edwyn Cooper assisted the police
Boyce told lawyer Edwyn Cooper (Dominic Cooper) wasn’t safe and only had a matter of time with the solicitor assisting the investigation.
The detective said any of the intelligence from Edwyn needed to go directly him to stop any police corruption.
Edwyn explained how he laundered the money and bounced it around Swiss bank accounts and didn’t think he had blood on his hands – until Nikki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer) and her colleagues told him John Fordham (Hadley Fraser) was dead because of it.
Edwyn later withdrew cooperation and was sent to prison but not before the police managed to locate another associate. He was last seen in a jail doing time for his part in the crime.
Boyce was under investigation
Boyce found himself under investigation and realised he was going up against systems both in south London and “elsewhere”, who wanted to shut down his investigation into Brink’s-Mat as he was on to them.
But Boyce hit back by freezing Kenneth Noye (Jack Lowden) bank accounts and getting him on a theft of porcelain.
He was eventually cleared of any allegations and Boyce passed on the details of some dodgy coppers to his superiors following a meeting with Edwyn’s solicitor.
Noye was sent to prison
Noye lied about the Brink’s-Mat gold and said the bars found in his house were planted by the police.
But he did ended up getting incarcerated and told the court: “I hope you all die of cancer.”
Even by the end, Noye remained defiant and told Boyce he would be remembered for pulling off the heist.
Gordon Parry & the other Brink’s-Mat associates
Gordon Parry (Sean Harris) fled from the UK but the police caught up with as he teased money going to Panama.
Parry threatened Sienna Rose (Ellora Torchia) and told her to tell Edwyn to stay silent and they appreciated his loyalty.
Viewers found out the fate of many of the others individuals associated in the Brink’s-Mat operation, many of them ended up in prison or getting fined.
Half the gold was still missing
The Brink’s-Mat taskforce realised they were only going after half of the gold with the other half disappearing into the ether after it was split right at the beginning.

The final scene
Boyce, Jennings and Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott) got to work as they went back to the start of the heist to try and find the original six men in a van, who carried out the robbery.
The trio were contemplating the case and how to pursue the gold and the other perpetrators, knowing they had their work cut out.
In real-life, most of the gold was never recovered and only some of the people involved in the mass money laundering and gold selling operation ever brought to justice.
The gold eventually found its way back into the legitimate market while proceeds from the crime was used to fund the Docklands property boom in the mid-1980s and early 1990s.
The Gold airs on BBC One on Sundays at 9pm and is streaming as a boxset on the BBC iPlayer
