The Handmaid’s Tale fans left ‘annoyed’ by cryptic Instagram update

Yvonne Strahovski teases The Handmaids Tale season six ending

The Handmaid’s Tale fans were left enraged after they were teased with a cryptic social media post.

The hit dystopian drama left viewers on the edge of their seats when the season five finale aired in November 2022 and as a result, fans have since been eagerly waiting for updates.

However, with the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes the wait has been particularly unbearable as stars are currently prohibited from discussing the show.

While fans have taken to theories and the Margaret Atwood novels to fill their June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) sized hole, the official Instagram page was updated.

Although this post sparked interest, Hulu viewers were disappointed to realise it was an old photo of Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).

Fans slammed the drama as they took to the comments with annoyance, including @javi191991 who wrote: “Stop posting unless it’s for a new season!!!! This is torture.”

A fuming @leafypholiage added: “Stop playing with us!!”

A third follower @shelle_villanelle stated: “Stop posting this stuff unless there’s an announcement of the new season.”

To which @natiqueenbee agreed: “EXACTLY!! I was about to text all my friends. I’m so annoyed.”

Despite the backlash, other users defended the show’s lack of updates as @charliesiobhan clarified: “Y’all they are on strike they can’t announce a new season.”

@trish.kadish echoed: “You guys do realize the writers have been on strike.”

Along with the immediate shutdown of Hollywood film and television productions, SAG-AFTRA members will not be able to participate in any promotion of productions made pursuant to a SAG-AFTRA agreement.

This means they cannot be present for film or television premieres, and cannot take part in interviews or press events for the productions.

Ahead of the strikes, Deadline confirmed The Handmaid’s Tale spin-off was in the works to follow on from the season six’s series finale.

The upcoming drama will be titled The Testaments and loosely based on Margaret Attwood’s 2019 sequel novel of the same name.

The showrunner Bruce Miller told the publication: “It’s so lovely to have another book to go to.

“I think the people [who] watch the TV show have to be comfortable with the fact that just like Handmaid’s didn’t follow the book, The Testaments is a sequel to this TV show.”

The Handmaid’s Tale seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Channel 4.com in the UK and on Hulu in the USA.
