The Pact season two follows the story of a woman called Christine Rees (played by Rakie Ayola) whose life is turned upside down when a man who looks identical to her late son comes into her life with a shocking revelation. The series is set on the scenic Welsh coast and the show’s writer Peter McTighe has shared how he and the team behind the BBC series discovered the “house of secrets” where the Rees family reside.

The latest series, which features a new cast and storyline to the first outing, includes some entirely different settings in Wales.

The only returning actor is Rakie Ayola who is portraying the main character Christine Rees in the series.

Writer Peter McTighe said one of the reasons he cast her as a new character was because she is Welsh and was “able to bring the authenticity to the story that we needed”.

The series returned to BBC One last Monday, leaving viewers as intrigued with the filming locations as the unnerving plot.

Peter opened up to Express.co.uk and other media about finding the “perfect” location for Christine and her family’s eerie house.

He explained: “I just felt with series one we had looked at very specific areas and we had that dense woodland and that amazing countryside and I really wanted a big contrast to that so series two could stand alone.

“So we settled on the coast very quickly and had this brilliant location on the Welsh coast so I took advantage of that and it gives the show a very different feel.”

The show was filmed in Rest Bay in Porthcawl, Penarth Pier, Llantwit Major and Southern Down.

Reflecting on Christine’s mini-mansion based in Llantwit Major, Peter said it is claustrophobic in its own way with its gothic interior.

“We made up the area from different parts of the coast which we jigsawed together but the house with the family in is the [key] part of the script,” he added.

“It is this gothic Shakesperian environment and for our locations, people really managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat as it looks incredible outside and inside.

“It’s quite unique and is almost a character of its own as it’s a house of secrets.”

He added: “That house is like a private refuge, this atmospheric, mysterious, slightly claustrophobic sanctuary.

“It’s almost like something from a ghost story, which is appropriate because the family is kind of haunted in a way by what has happened to one of their own.”

Director Nicole Volavka said Christine’s house was “really tricky to find” but felt the one they settled with was “perfect”.

She added: “It took us a number of weeks as it had to be big enough to facilitate a film crew and look like a family home as well.”

“I think at the centre of it is a grieving mother and a grieving family so I did want to go darker with it,” Nicole explained.

“I didn’t want to be afraid of being quite bold and going darker with that.

“For the colour palette we used dual tones, green, teals and reds, and we faded them so there was something quite gothic and dilapidated to the house.”

The Pact continues on Mondays on BBC One at 9pm and the box set is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
