Why did George Dzundza leave Law and Order as Detective Max Greevey?

Sometimes it is the writers who kill off characters for creative reasons but, in this case, it was actor Dzundza’s decision to leave Law and Order.

Even though the drama is set in New York, the original plan was to mostly film in Los Angeles where Dzundza lived with his family.

However, it later came about that production decided to settle in New York permanently with Dzundza finding the commute difficult.

He didn’t want to move him and his family to the Big Apple either so this was one of the reasons he chose to leave.

The other explanation for his departure was the fact Dzundza just didn’t like the direction the show was going in.

Speaking to Pop Entertainment in 2003, he said: “I felt that it was a plot-driven show…

“There was a lot of interplay between Chris [Noth] and I…

“As the season went on, I saw that the stories were becoming more Dragnet-like.

“I said no, this is not for me. This is not what I signed on to do. And, I had to take care of my family, frankly, as well.”

Only two other lead characters would go on to die in the line of duty; Assistant District Attorney Claire Kincaid (Jill Hennessey) and Alexandria Borgia (Annie Parisse).

Following his time on Law and Order, Dzundza went on to star in the first seasons of the sitcom Jesse and the CBS drama Hack.

He also starred for two years in Grey’s Anatomy as the dad of George O’Malley (TR Knight).

Law and Order is available to watch on NBC.
