The Repair shop: Amanda Middleditch admits restoration was worse than she thought
The Repair Shop’s Amanda Middleditch admitted that a restoration project was “worse” than she first anticipated.
BBC’s resident teddy bear experts Amanda and Julie Tatchell were given the mammoth task of restitching Maria’s childhood bear, Teddy, which had originally been given to her in 1956.
However, due to being fixed up “many times” by Maria’s mother, the teddy bear ladies had a tough restoration job on their hands.
After initially pulling the bear apart, Amanda claimed: “It’s a lot worse than I anticipated. The previous repairs were done with a very thick thread.
“Unfortunately it’s caused some big holes that have made the edges really, really weak.”

Whilst speaking to the camera, the TV star continued to lay out her game plan for bringing the teddy bear back to life.
She said she was going to “strengthen” the toy by “lining it”, and that her “plan of attack” was to lay all of the pieces out and get going as soon as possible.
“So, between the strengthening fabric and the original fabric, I am going to use velvet so that we don’t have the felt showing through”.
She added: “Saying that – this repair is not going to be invisible but it’s going to be much stronger.”
Returning to Maria’s teddy later on in the programme, Amanda revealed that she had revamped the teddy bear’s original millboard growler, which worked to give the bear a ‘voice’.

“Maria didn’t even realise it was in there so I think it’s going to be really fun when she actually realises that he makes a little sound now,” she explained.
After stitching up the beloved bear, the plushie owner was invited back to the workshop and later reunited with her childhood toy.
After expressing euphoria, Maria questioned the visible stitching on her childhood toy’s arm.
In explanation, Amanda said: “We’ve done the repairs so he has a little scar. It’s part of his life story.”
The teddy owner expressed her thanks to The Repair Shop and stated that she couldn’t thank them enough”.
Episodes of The Repair Shop air every weekday on BBC One.
