Supernatural drama series Vampire Academy debuted earlier this year and follows on from the 2014 film of the same name. While the movie proved to be unsuccessful, there are high hopes from the new show which is thought to be more in line with the source material. Vampire Academy is set in a fantastical world in which vampires or Moroi are guarded by a guardian race known as Dhampirs who protect them from the Strigoi, a breed of feral, monstrous vampires thought to act on animalistic instinct without any sentience.
The show follows Rose Hathaway (played by Sisi Stringer) and her friendship with Princess Vasilisa ‘Lissa’ Dragomir (Daniela Nieves) with the two attending St Vladimir’s Academy.
However, while finishing their education, the pair will be facing dangers with Lissa in line for the Moroi throne after her family is brutally murdered.
Early reviews from Rotten Tomatoes gives Vampire Academy as 73 per cent fresh rating from the critics and an 83 per cent fresh rating from the audience, suggesting the show has been going down well with the core fanbase as well as those coming to the world of the Moroi and Dhampirs for the first time.
Speaking about how the show differs from the novels, Mikhail Tanner actor Max Parker said: “My character doesn’t appear in the first book, which I only learnt when I got the job. I quickly bought the first book and tried to read it all before we started. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not in it.’
“Essentially, as a fan, if you’re watching the show, it’s almost seeing the story that you know told in a whole different way. It’s like re-watching the story that you always wanted to watch and you don’t know what’s coming next.
“There might be a bit from book six put into series one and there might be a bit that you love from book one that won’t make it until series three.

“It’s a new envisioning of the original story, which I think is exciting. You don’t want to go and see Harry Potter and see everything you expect.”
He added: “So I would say, it’s extremely different but everything that was missing that the fans wanted from the film to be made right here.”
While Louisa Connolly-Burnham, who portrays a blood w**** Silver, said: “There was this fan on Twitter who every episode has been writing all the similarities between the books and the episodes.
“So I was reading through that and I think there is a lot of similarities. But you know, naturally, there have been some changes.”
Blake Patrick plays Eddie Castile in the show and commented on the parallels: “I wouldn’t say there’s a huge difference between my version of Eddie and Eddie in the books.
“I think ultimately there is the underlying loyalty, determined to do his job as a guardian and training as a novice and that kind of loyalty to his friends as well.
“But then there’s also that iciness and kind of charm. He’s a bit of a joker, a bit of a lad. I think my version of Eddie is very similar to the books.”
While Tatiana Vogel actress Anita-Joy Uwajeh hailed the fan reaction and said she’s heard there was even a campaign for season two of Vampire Academy on Twitter.
She said: “I think the campaign has been incredibly positive and great, which is amazing. For a show that has such a massive fanbase with regards to the books, you hope that you get it right enough that people who are already in love with the books are still in love with this version of it.
“But hopefully people who haven’t had any awareness of the books are also brought into it.
“Ultimately, I feel like this is what this series is doing and from what I’ve heard in regard to the response from audience members.”
All of the cast were hopeful for a second outing of Vampire Academy, which has been made by legendary American TV producer Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre.
Anita-Joy teased about the possible future of the show: “I think it could go in so many different directions. I think what’s really cool about the series is that the books are through Rose’s perspective mainly but the series allows you to go on a journey with all of these characters.
“So I think season two will just be another even deeper dive into the journeys of these characters that have already started to take shape in season one. I just think season two would be even more epic.”
Blake echoed his co-star’s sentiments, saying: “There’s quite a few characters and rules and everything to get your head around and season one is definitely establishing that.
“And I think in season two you really get the chance to dive into those characters and dive into those different stories and plot lines.”
Vampire Academy is available now on Peacock, exclusively on Sky and NOW, with new episodes dropping weekly
