Dead City will throw Maggie (played by Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) into fresh new challenges when it premieres on AMC. The pair began to build bridges in The Walking Dead’s series finale and now fans have gotten their first glimpse at how their lives will look away from the likes of Daryl (Norman Reedus) thanks to an all-new trailer.
And while there are a number of new faces who’ll be introduced to the TWD universe in the spin-off, fans have found their attention grabbed by one rather terrifying feature.
To recap, the new promo opens with Negan and Maggie trying to hide behind a wall as a menacing character appears to be stalking the two.
Soon after, fans are introduced to a new character perusing an old phonebook before he lands his finger on Manhattan, New York.
Moments later, Maggie and Negan are hiding behind a car with a new ally, presumably preparing to tackle Walkers or something even deadlier.
However, it’s the next split-second shot of a Walker which has got excitement levels rising, as it looks worlds away from those featured in the flagship drama.
Complete with a stacked body and longer teeth, the “new” Walker is seen losing its flesh as it tries to rip through a structure.
The trailer ends with pace action shots of brawls, Walker killing and a pensive shot of both Negan and Maggie.
Inevitably, it didn’t take long for fans to react to the promo once it was shared by The Walking Dead on AMC’s official Twitter account.
“New variant???” TWD fan @besideyook enquired as they shared a screen grab of the aforementioned Walker.
Fellow fan @KirstieRossi was also intrigued: “Whys it look like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle but not at the same time.”
While @Tomello20 added: “Looks like something from resident evil so cool.”
Jesus Acevedo also shared an image of the Walker and tweeted: “Looks like more then a zombie… LET’S GO.”

This wouldn’t be the first time new variations of traditional Walkers have entered the fray in the TWD universe.
Throughout the show’s 11th and final season, Negan, Aaron (Ross Marquand) and Jerry (Cooper Andrews) all expressed their disbelief at how the living dead had changed.
Season 11 introduced the fact that the Walkers could now climb obstacles, making it much harder to plan an escape.
And this new characteristic had devastating consequences as fans watched the new climbing Walkers take down a number of the Commonwealth’s armed guards.
So will Dead City’s Walkers also be able to climb and perhaps have learned even more skills to make them much more dangerous foes?
Dead City will premiere on AMC and AMC+ in the USA in 2023. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
