Alpha (played by Samantha Morton) quickly became one of The Walking Dead’s most horrifying villains following her introduction to the show’s universe. As the leader of the Whisperers, AMC viewers witnessed the cold-blooded murderer wreak havoc on the likes of Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and co alongside psychotic righthand man Beta (Ryan Hurst). Now, after bidding farewell to Alpha thanks to her graphic death at the hands of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Morton is moving onto pastures new – and it’s a role that sounds unmissable for her fans.
Morton is teaming up with the likes of Bridgerton’s Ruby Stokes and Peaky Blinders star Conrad Khan for the Paramount+ series, The Burning Girls.
The role will be one of Morton’s few returns to the small screen since leaving TWD, with a leading part in Starz drama The Serpent Queen also in the works and set for release on September 11.
Morton also reprised the role of Alpha recently to pop up in the Walking Dead spin-off, Tales of the Walking Dead, to delve deeper into Alpha’s life before her Whisperer days.
The Burning Girls sounds like a role worlds away from her Whisperer alter-ego, with Paramount releasing a gripping synopsis to coincide with the casting news.
It reads: “500 years ago, Protestant martyrs – including two young girls – were betrayed and burned at the stake. 30 years ago, two teenage girls disappeared without a trace. And a few weeks ago, the vicar of the local parish hanged himself in the nave of the church.
“Psychological horror meets small-town mystery in this story of a troubled vicar, desperate to exorcise the demons of her past and find peace in their new home, what message is someone trying to send them?
“The more Jack (Morton) and Flo (Stokes) unearth, the deeper they are drawn into the age-old rifts, mysteries, and suspicions of this insular village.”
Morton will take on the leading role of troubled vicar Jack, who’s described as “a single parent haunted by a tragedy from her previous church and who bears the onus of her husband’s death”.
Stokes and Morton will also be joined by a number of recognisable faces elsewhere in the cast, including the aforementioned Khan.
Sherlock star and Riviera stalwart Rupert Graves will take on the role of Simon Harper in the new Paramount+ series.
Elsewhere, Stranger Things’ Elodie Grace Orkin, The Last Kingdom’s David Dawson and EastEnders star Paul Bradley will appear.
Rounding out the cast are actors including Mollie Holder, John Macmillan, Janie Dee, Beth Cordingly, Jack Roth and Jane Lapotaire.

Meanwhile, the world of The Walking Dead is still going strong despite Morton’s departure last season.
In October, the final third of the final ever series will return to AMC to round out the story of the community’s battle with the Commonwealth.
But despite these being the final eight episodes, TWD will live on in a series of spin-offs.
One of which will welcome the return of series stalwart Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), years after his season nine departure.
Lincoln will reprise the role of Rick opposite Michonne (Danni Gurira), who also bid farewell to the flagship series in recent years.
Elsewhere, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan will live on in a separate spin-off set after the events of the season 11 finale.
And the TWD universe’s expansion doesn’t stop there as Daryl will also be the lead of his own series, with McBride having to leave the project as Carol.
The Burning Girls will premiere on Paramount+ in 2023.
