A war is brewing between England and Scotland in season 2 of The Spanish Princess, and a Tudor princess is stuck in the middle of the conflict. Last season, Prince Harry’s (now Henry VIII) sister Margaret “Meg” Tudor was sent north — against her strenuous objections — to marry King James IV. In the season 2 premiere, it’s clear she’s having trouble adjusting to life in the Scottish court. She has to raise her husband’s bastard children, along with two of her own. Plus, James rebuffs her efforts to get more involved in politics.
If the person playing the Queen of Scots looks familiar, there’s a good reason. Georgie Henley, the actor who plays the character, had a major role in a popular fantasy franchise.
Georgie Henley played Lucy in ‘The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe’
Henley’s role in The Spanish Princess isn’t the first time she’s portrayed a queen on screen. In 2005, she starred in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. In the movie, she plays Lucy Pevensie, a girl who discovers a portal in a wardrobe to another world. At the end of the movie, Lucy and her sister and brother defeat the evil White Witch and become kings and queens of Narnia.
Henley went on to reprise her role as Lucy in the two subsequent Chronicles of Narnia movies: Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Margaret Tudor will play an important role in ‘The Spanish Princess’ Season 2
So far, we haven’t seen a lot of Meg on this season of The Spanish Princess. But she definitely has an important role to play in upcoming episodes. The same goes for her sister Mary (Sai Bennett), who marries the King of France.
“Meg’s a very big character in the back eight,” showrunner Matthew Graham told Entertainment Weekly in 2019. “We absolutely follow the story of Meg, just as we also follow the story of Mary and her trials and tribulations in France with fat King Louis.”
“What you’re looking at is Meg in the North and her story and how it intersects with Catherine,” Graham went on to say. “Then, Mary in France and how that intersects and involves Catherine. Catherine is the linchpin in the middle in London. We’re looking forward to Scotland and England going at it — and putting Catherine and Meg in the heart of that war and those politics.”
Henley talks about playing a historical character on ‘The Spanish Princess’
During an appearance on Talking Beasts: The Narnia Podcast in April 2020, Henley talked about playing a historical character. She shared her reaction when she learned that real events inspired some of the more dramatic moments in season 2.
“There’s been a few times with my character in the new [season] that we just finished filming where I’ve gone up to the writers and said, ‘This didn’t really happen. You’ve pepped this up a bit, you’ve made this up.’ And they’re like, ‘Nope, this happened. Yes it’s crazy but it totally happened.’”
The Spanish Princess airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Starz.
