Sony’s shared universe of Spider-Man-free Spider-Man spin-offs hasn’t even had a film release yet, but the studio are already planning to do quite a few more.
The studio were working on a film called Silver and Black, but have now decided to cancel that and give both superheroines, Silver Sable and Black Cat, their own individual movies (in fact, a lot of characters could be getting movies).
And there’s Venom, which is kicking everything off. In typical Hollywood studio fashion, a trilogy is already being thought about.
As revealed by leading man Tom Hardy, in an interview with Total Film: “We’ve signed up for three of them. So it’s very much an open case.
We’ll see what people’s responses are to it. I think it’s an awesome character. I love playing both of them.”
He’s also coined the term ‘Venom-verse’, adding: “It’s an amuse-bouche, and for Sony, it’s the Venom-verse launched in isolation, as it were.
“We’re all prepped for it to be a standalone universe. So whatever Sony want to attach to it at a later date, it’s a fulcrum piece. But let’s see what happens when it lands.”
We’ll have to see if the ‘Venom-verse’ takes off. Universal have seen their Dark Universe crash and burn, while the 5 planned sequels to King Arthur: Legend of the Sword aren’t going to happen. Can you have a superhero shared universe without your superhero?
Venom will be released on October 5.
