The new trailer for Sony’s next Marvel venture Venom is officially here – and guess what, we actually get to see Venom this time.
Venom stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist looking to uncover the dodgy symbiote experimentation being overseen by Dr Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) only to become infused with the symbiote himself, leading to a battle for his soul as he starts being taken over by the darkness.
Or, something to that effect. Here’s your first look:
The two-and-a-half-minute trailer begins with Drake (Ahmed) procuring the symbiote from what looks to be a crash site, before we see Eddie investigating Drake and his premises after chastising Anna (Michelle Williams) for working there.
It then shows us Jenny Slate in action as a scientist from the Life foundation who is also spying on Drake’s work, explaining to Eddie that Drake believes “the union between human and symbiote is the key to our evolution”.
This in turn leads Eddie to invade the testing unit, getting attacked by one of the subjects and become venomous himself.
What soon becomes clear is that Eddie may not be entirely in control anymore, as the symbiote starts to take over.
“If you’re going to stay, you may only hurt bad people,” he warns the voice in his head.
Nonetheless – and thankfully – it seems the symbiote really does start to take control, as the trailer closes with our first look at Venom (who was notably absent from the first trailer) and the chilling proclamation: “We are Venom.”
Venom is directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the movie, along with former Sony Chairperson Amy Pascal, who oversaw the first Sony/Marvel film Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Although Venom is said to be set in the same world as Homecoming, Spidey himself is not believed to be in the film. But don’t rule out a Tom Holland cameo as Peter Parker…
Venom is due out in cinemas on October 5, 2018.
