Yellowstone season five recently premiered and immersed viewers back into the world of Montana with the show really upping the ante this year. The Dutton family saw their status in the local community on the up with patriarch John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) sworn in as the Governor of the state. John’s new role gave him more power as he planned to protect his lands even further from his enemies and installing his trusted advisors in his office including daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) while keeping the faithful Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) close at hand.
Does Cole Hauser wear a wig for Yellowstone?
No, the American star doesn’t wear a wig to help him transform into the Dutton Ranch handler Rip Wheeler.
However, Hauser does dye his hair as part of getting into character as they stoic hard man.
Speaking about colouring both his hair and his beard for Rip, Hauser said it was a decision he made with the production team.
Hauser said: “When I first got the role, as you know Kelly’s a ginger and I’m ginger as well.
“We looked like we were brother and sister! So we kind of had to make sure that wouldn’t be the case.”
The star continued: “[Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan said], ‘I don’t want to do it to her, but what do you think about dying your hair?’ Because I’ve dyed it for other stuff that I’ve done.”
Adding to Jenny McCarthy on her show in 2021: “They liked that look, and it’s kind of a harder look. Your eyes pop a little bit more.”
So, Hauser changed his hair colour to add to Rip’s dangerous look with the character often bumping off people on John’s orders.

However, this wasn’t the end of Hauser’s transformation into Rip, he also underwent a strict training regime to help change his physique for the Yellowstone cowboy.
Hauser had to bulk up his muscle mass to add to his character’s hulking figure.
As part of his regime, Hauser went horse riding everyday “all day long”, admitting he kept going “until my legs were about to fall off”.
The star went on to say: “Riding and roping and cutting and doing the different disciplines that we do on the show, it’ll keep you in shape.”
He also changed his diet to a cowboy’s staple of rice, beans and steak as part of really embodying Rip.
Hauser said doing all of this made him strong and changed his body into “something it wasn’t before”.
The actor’s process of becoming Rip seems to have paid off with the character becoming a fan-favourite among fans.
Prior to starring in Yellowstone, Hauser appeared in the TV series Rogue, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, as well as Dazed and Confused, Good Will Hunting and 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Many fans are now worried about Rip’s fate in season five of Yellowstone after the show’s Instagram account teased his fate could be at stake.
Along with a video, the account shared a cryptic caption: “Celebrating Rip Wheeler today and always. PS: Get ready, #YellowstoneTV fans. Something big is coming.”
But Hauser tried to quell fears Rip was going to be meeting a sticky end.
He told Today: “My mom’s told me a couple of them and I said: ‘Mom, I do the killing. Don’t worry about it.'”
