Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) had some exciting news for Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) in tonight’s Emmerdale. He’d been chatting to Charles (Kevin Mathurin) about wedding plans and discovered that Charles had had a cancellation for February 14 – meaning that Mackenzie and Charity could get married on Valentine’s Day. So romantic!
But the news didn’t go down well with Charity, who didn’t want to talk about it because she was waiting for a wine delivery.
Later on, she needed someone to talk to and Chloe (Jessie Elland) happened to be walking by. Chloe already had a lot on her mind after Sarah (Katie Hill) had asked her straight out whether Mackenzie was the father of her baby. Chloe managed to lie and convince Sarah that she’d never do anything to hurt her or Charity, but this must have been on her mind when Charity told her that Mackenzie wanted to set a date.
‘It all feels a bit too real. I liked it when it was just an idea,’ the reluctant bride-to-be admitted. She told Chloe that the idea of marriage scared her because it had never worked out for her in the past.
Chloe pointed out that a lot of people get divorced, to which Charity sighed. ‘Oh yeah. Divorce would have been way easier.’ She wasn’t about to go into details but said that she was happy with Mack and she trusted him, but she didn’t want to rush anything.
Later, Charity told Mack she wanted to talk about the wedding. She said her previous marriages all ended badly. ‘And I am not just talking messy divorce here. I am talking actual blood and guts.’
Mack thought this was a ‘bit of an exaggeration,’ but if anything Charity was possibly playing down the blood and guts.
‘Chris (Peter Amory) killed himself and set me up for murder. Declan (Jason Merrells) actually tried to kill me. And then there’s Jai (Chris Bisson)!’
Charity married Chris Tate in 2001 and he killed himself two years later after he discovered that she had been having an affair with Cain (Jeff Hordley). He toasted to the ‘death of their marriage’ and realised he’d killed himself by drinking a poisoned drink, which had been an attempt to frame Charity for his murder.
She married Jai Sharma in 2012, but in echoes of the current storyline he ended up getting Rachel Breckle (Gemma Oaten) pregnant and Charity filed for divorce when she found out.
Declan Macey fled the village in 2014 after trying to murder Charity and accidentally killing his nephew Robbie Lawson (Jamie Shelton).
You can see Charity’s point – marriage has most certainly not ended well for her.
She thinks that Mackenzie is different to the other men in her life and is someone she can trust, she told Chloe. The irony of the situation is of course that Chloe is carrying Mackenzie’s baby, and Mack has spent months lying to Charity and being pretty horrible to Chloe in an effort to stop Charity finding out.
Let’s just say the omens are not good for a Mackenzie/Charity marriage. The show’s boss Jane Hudson has stated that, despite Charity’s reservations, the wedding will go ahead – but there will be fireworks.
‘Weddings never go smoothly, and Chloe’s baby is due around the time of the wedding!’ she told us.
‘I think you can put the pieces together yourself and figure out what might happen around the wedding – it will be explosive for Charity and Mackenzie.’
