The debut instalment of Netflix’s first collaboration with iconic filmmaker Tim Burton has been a roaring success for the streamer, and millions of fans are already demanding a second season of Wednesday. Whether or not Jenna Ortega reprises her role as the spooky gothic teen is still to be confirmed, but the creators already have ideas for her next adventures at Nevermore Academy.

Co-creators Miles Millar and Al Gough have confirmed a romance between Wednesday and Enid Sinclair (played by Emma Meyers) isn’t off the table for season two.

During the first season of the latest Netflix phenomenon, cynical teen Wednesday becomes reluctant friends with her bubbly and colourful new roommate.

Enid’s werewolf powers are instrumental in putting a stop to the sinister plot at Nevermore, and she has now become a fan-favourite new addition to the Addams Family world.

Some fans even felt certain scenes hinted at some romantic tension between the two girls, despite Wednesday juggling male love interests throughout the series.

“This idea of sisterhood is key to the show,” Miles said after the first season was released.

“We’re not gonna discount anything, and, obviously, sometimes characters reveal themselves, which is the fun thing we love about television, that it’s an organic journey.”

Wednesday’s sexuality is never directly addressed, and the heroine herself is pointedly vague about who she may or may not be attracted to.

However, there are many fans who insist several scenes between herself and Enid are deliberately queer-coded to lead into a romantic plot in season two.

“We have a roadmap, and we’d like to have routes along that map that take you in unexpected directions,” Mark told the Hollywood Reporter.

“So, we’re open to everything. We wanna explore that friendship in every way.

“But we’re not gonna be… this is where you sometimes get misdirected by fans and things like that.

“So it’s just being really open to see how those characters develop and that friendship. As Al said, that friendship is key to our sort of vision of the show.”

It appears Wednesday and Enid are destined to remain just friends for now, though Mark’s comments at least indicate they’ll stay roomies for the time being.

A second season is likely to remain at Nevermore Academy, with much of the cast reprising their roles to solve a new mystery.

While the two girls may remain platonic for the time being, future seasons could head in some unexpected directions and eventually have the friends declare their feelings for one another.

Moreover, the actresses themselves have been more than receptive to the idea of Wednesday and Enid becoming a same-sex couple.

In an interview with Pride, Emma is informed Jenna said: “In a perfect world, [Wednesday and Enid] would have been a thing.”

To which Emma coyly replied: “I always say, ‘And they were roommates’.”

She added it would be a fun possibility, and teased opposites attract – and there aren’t many pairings more opposite than gloomy Wednesday and her sunny new bestie.

Wednesday season 1 is available to stream on Netflix.
