What I Rent: Charlotte, £900 a month for a three-bedroom house in Norwich

Welcome back to What I Rent, our weekly series exploring the reality of renting.

This time around we’re chatting with Charlotte, 27, a primary school teacher living in Norwich.

Charlotte rents a three-bedroom house with her husband, Joe, and their two ‘fur children’ – Rufus the dog and Matilda the cat.

The family have been blessed with a great landlord who lets them decorate as they choose.

Here’s how they rent.

Hi, Charlotte! How much do you pay to live here?

Rent here is £900 a month and utilities and council tax are around £300 monthly all in.

What do you get for what you pay?

This is a three-bedroom house with one tiny bathroom!

Do you feel like you have a good deal?

Yes, we think we do have a good deal.

Our landlord is lovely and is totally happy for us to pretty much do what we like as he assures us that it is our home.

We call ourselves ‘serial renters’ so we have had a variety of landlords and it makes a really big difference when you have a kind landlord who really wants you to make a home in their house.

Do you like the area?

We are located in the north of Norwich.

I love my home and I enjoy living in the area.

The local pubs are excellent and this side of the city has a friendly buzz to it.

How did you find the property?

We found it on Rightmove and went to see it as soon as we could.

How have you made this place feel like home?

There isn’t much about our home that looks the same as when we moved in.

We really have projected our personality on every wall.

Also – our pets. Pets really do make a house a home.

I wish more landlords took a leaf out of our landlord’s book and allowed tenants to have pets. Animals make people happy!

Have you found it difficult to decorate when renting?

It’s not been difficult at all. It’s just tricky to know what to invest in when you don’t own a place.

People will always ask ‘why do you decorate it when you don’t own it?’ and we often reply ‘because it’s our home’.

Do you feel like you have enough space?

Yes, if I could do anything I would put in a downstairs bathroom/toilet too as the upstairs one is so little!

Are there any problems with the home you have to deal with?

Not really, we love it!

Do you have plans to move again any time soon?

Ideally, we won’t move again until we are putting down a deposit to own our own home but, at the end of the day, I truly believe that owning isn’t the be all and end all.

The other week, our fridge packed in, and within 24 hours the landlord was round fitting a brand new fridge freezer. He had ordered it within the hour.

If we owned the house we would have been forking out some serious money. There is a lot to be said for the security of renting and being able to rely on a landlord.

I’d like to own a home in the long term, but we are in no great hurry.
