Where is Coronation Street filmed and can you visit it?

Love it or loathe it, there’s no denying that Coronation Street has become a British institution.

The show is due to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2020, and is still one of the most popular shows on UK TV.

So it’s no surprise to learn that there are plenty of fans out there who’d love the opportunity to visit Weatherfield for themselves, or perhaps even stop off for a pint in the Rovers.

The question is – just where is the show filmed, and can the public visit?

Here’s what you need to know…

Where is Coronation Street filmed?

Coronation Street is currently filmed on a set at MediaCity UK in Salford, Manchester – where it’s been since November 2013.

The £10m set saw the soap’s famous landmarks slightly altered, with the Rovers Return being given two upstairs windows and the streets slightly widened to allow cars to pass each other comfortably.

A grand total of 11,000 of Corrie’s famous cobbles were also laid on the new set, which has been artificially weathered to make it look as realistic as it can be.

The interior scenes, meanwhile, are filmed on sound stages at MediaCity UK.

Prior to this the soap was filmed on at Granada Studios in Quay Street, Manchester, on a set which was opened by The Queen in 1982.

The early days of Corrie, from 1960-1968 were filmed entirely on an indoor set at Granada Studios, with and outside set added to the show in 1968.

Can you visit the Coronation Street set?

The former set in Quay Street was open to the public for tours until 2015 but has now been demolished, with reports that the lot has been sold to make way for new properties and shops.

However you can visit the current set, with tours running on selected weekend dates.

The tour offers fans the chance to explore the external sets of the show, on an 80-minute jaunt through Rosamund Street, Victoria Street and of course Coronation Street itself.

However don’t expect to bump into any of the cast members on set, as the tours are only conducted on certain weekends once cast and crew have downed scripts and left.

Tickets cost £35 for adults and £17.50 for children aged between five and 15, while there’s free admission for under-fives.

You can find out more at the Coronation Street The Tour website.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 7.30pm.
