A conservatorship is a form of legal guardianship.

It grants a chosen individual full authority over another's life and assets.

The conservator typically holds the same rights and responsibilities as a parent would over a child.

It is typically enacted for individuals who are incapable of making their own decisions.

During that time, he was her agent, manager and minder.

What is Britney Spears' dad's net worth?

Even now, Britney remains one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, which means that she's also one of the wealthiest.

Recent estimates suggest that the pop star's net worth is in the region of $70million (£57 million).

There aren't any publicly available estimates about Jamie's net worth, but based on his daughter's income, there are ways to speculate how much money he earned.

In 2016, it was reported that Jamie was taking home an annual salary of roughly $130,000 (£104,000) for his role of taking care of his daughter's finances and overseeing her mental health.

On top of that, it was also reported that he made 1.5 percent from performances and merchandise related to Britney's Las Vegas residency.

In 2022, Britney slammed her father  for "taking over $6million" during her conservatorship.

What has Jamie Spears said about the conservatorship?

In December 2022, speaking exclusively for the first time about the 13-year conservatorship, which controlled almost every aspect of Britney's life, Jamie Spears claimed he is far from the monster fans have painted him to be.

In his first interview in more than a decade, Jamie, speaking ahead of a book by Britney's ex-husband Kevin Federline about fatherhood in the midst of public drama, said: “My God, where would she be without that conservatorship now? I ain’t gonna paint you no pretty pictures.

"That conservatorship was one hell of a time, and without it I don’t know if she would be alive now.”

Jamie, 70, has endured cruel slurs that claimed he wanted power over Britney, 41, to line his own pockets and micro-manage her career.

Even though he says all decisions under the order were taken jointly with a “group of very good people”, her fans saw him as a controlling puppet-master.

Jamie added: “I love my daughter with all my heart and soul. This situation between us is just terrible.”

He also backed a recent claim by her ex-husband Kevin Federline that the court order did not destroy her relationship with her sons Preston, 17, and Jayden, 16 — it made it possible for her to rebuild it.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday one year after a Los Angeles judge finally set his daughter free, he said: “I don’t believe she would’ve got the kids back without the conservatorship.”

He also insists he and Britney had “good times under the conservatorship” and claims it gave her two sons a sense of normality.

He said: “We could all help get the boys to and from the doctors, they didn’t ever go to school one day without lunch. The conservatorship also made sure that the boys never left that house without security.”

What has Britney said about the conservatorship?

Britney has compared her "abusive" conservatorship to sex trafficking as she spoke out in June 2021 for the first time since her public breakdown in 2007.

“In California, the only similar thing to this is called sex trafficking, making anyone work against their will," she said.

"And taking all their possessions away, credit card, cash, phone, passport."

The singer addressed a courtroom by video as her dad, Jamie, and mum, Lynn, also joined in.

During the hearing, Britney argued her father should no longer have control over her life.

In August 2022, Britney once again addressed the conservatorship.

In an impromptu YouTube video that has since been made private, the singer accused her parents of pre-meditating her hospitalisation in 2008.

The recording saw Britney claim that a woman had "introduced the idea to her" parents Lynne and Jamie prior to her hospitalisation under mental health reasons.

She went on to say that mum Lynne "helped him follow through" and "made it all happen" as she opened up about how a Swat team collected her from her home and held her down in an ambulance.

After the video was released Lynne insisted that she had always had Britney's "best interests" at heart – and was heartbroken that the pair no longer speak.

When was Britney's conservatorship implemented?

Britney was was involuntarily placed under her conservatorship in 2008, following a series of public meltdowns.

As mentioned, the arrangement put her financial assets, estate, and personal assets under the control of her father and lawyer.

In August 2020, Britney began a bid to remove her father from controlling her life.

In November 2020, it was agreed by a judge that the conservatorship would remain in place.

However, Britney's lawyer said at the hearing that she was "scared" of her father and refused to perform while the conservatorship is in place.

In June 2021, a judge once again denied the request for Britney's requested co-conservator, Bessemer Trust, to take sole control of her estate, reported TMZ.

In September 2021, Jamie filed to end the conservatorship himself.

Is Britney Spears' conservatorship over?

On Friday, November 12 2021, Spears was freed from her conservatorship after 13 years.

Judge Penny ruled that Britney's conservatorship be terminated, giving the star control of her life for the first time since before 2008.

Before she was freed of her conservatorship, Spears wore a #FreeBritney t-shirt in a video posted to her Instagram.

A source close to Britney told The Sun: “I don’t know if there is a word to explain what Britney is feeling. She cried and cried and cried celebrating with Sam. They’re both so excited and grateful. She feels this is really the first day of a new life.''

Outside the courthouse, Britney's lawyer, Mathew Rosengart exclusively told The Sun: "Britney has made sure from California to New York that conservatorships like this have a new spotlight on them. If it can happen to Britney it can happen to anybody.

"Today was an emotional day for many people and it was a day that was a long time coming. Britney loves her fans so much and credits them with her freedom. She knows they’re essential to what happened today.''
