Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on the ITV chat show, the TV doctor discussed the tennis player’s situation, which has sparked plenty of debate ever since he was ordered to leave Australia after being told he could travel there without a COVID-19 vaccination. The sportsman’s recent legal battle seemed to go his way as the court ordered he could remain in the country, but reports are now circulating that he has in fact been re-arrested. Lorraine and the medical expert described the situation a “complete mess” as they addressed the reports on Monday.
“To come in and to be seen to be breaking the rules has caused a lot of resentment on either side,” the 68-year-old commented.
Lorraine pointed out: “But then, he thought, presumably – he’s not going to come to Australia thinking that he’s not going to get in.”
“I wouldn’t have thought so,” Hilary agreed.
“Well, this is where it all gets very, very confusing,” Lorraine continued, before summing the incident up as “a complete mess”.
“This is a mess, isn’t it? Authorities have made a right pig’s ear of this,” the host commented.
“They have, and so has Novak, hasn’t he, really?” Dr Hilary replied.
“He’s come into the country, did he have COVID-19, do we have proof of his infection?
“If he was infected then why was he seen pictured with children at an event where they were getting awards.”
He added: “One way to solve all of this would have just been to test his antibodies.
“Is he immune or isn’t he immune?”
Lorraine later added: “There’s reports that he has been arrested.
“That’s coming, apparently, from a Serbian journalist who spoke to his father.
“So, we don’t really know what’s happening, it will become clearer throughout the day.
“It just seems really weird, and also, if he does get to play and he doesn’t win or do particularly well, he can say, ‘hang on a minute, I’ve had sleep deprivation, stress’ – all the rest of it.”
The doctor responded: “I’ve heard reports that the new saga is that he’s brought food in with him, which isn’t allowed.
“[Australia is] very, very strict on anyone bringing anything in at all.”
“Can I just say, what a mess!” Lorraine commented. “What a mess.”
“It’s a complete mess,” Dr Hilary agreed.
It comes as Djokovic told officials in Australia that he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19 during a Border Force interview last week.
The Serb, who has spoken out against mandated jabs on a number of previous occasions, was granted permission to compete at this year’s Australian Open despite initially being denied entry to the country upon his arrival earlier this month.
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
