However, the affair plot has seen viewers threatening to boycott the soap, particularly over Chas’s (played by Lucy Pargeter) behaviour towards her husband, Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) and the rest of her family. Chas’s mother Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) has just died after a heartbreaking battle with cancer, and Thursday’s episode of the ITV soap saw Chas vowing to leave the village with him after tomorrow’s funeral, leaving some claiming they would “stop watching”.
After picking fights with Paddy, Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb) and her brother, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), Chas left in a hurry to meet Al (Michael Wildman).
He had earlier told the married woman: “If things get too much, call me.”
The barmaid didn’t hesitate once things began to get stressful, and she wasted no time in arranging another secret meeting with Al.
Chas is furious with Moira for not telling anyone Faith had decided to end her own life to put an end to her suffering.
When she found out, Chas warned Moira not to attend the funeral and remained adamant about her stance during Thursday’s episode.
Paddy tried to get her to see reason, but she refused to listen to him.
“She’s grieving as well,” Paddy pointed out. “When she left here, she was crying her eyes out.”
“Crocodile tears Paddy, because she got found out,” Chas hit back.
“No, she loved Faith,” Paddy argued, to which Chas responded: “She loved her so much that she let her kill herself.”
“She didn’t let her, Faith made the decision – we’ve got to respect that,” Paddy responded.
“We? How is this your problem?” Chas snapped harshly.
As the row continued, Chas stormed out. When she met with Al later, she complained about how her family don’t care about her and requested they leave following the service.
“I just want to get away, leave all this behind. Tomorrow works for me,” she said to Al.
“Why not? Cain doesn’t give a damn about me, all he cares about is protecting his precious wife.
“Paddy’s trying to sweep everything under the carpet, how I feel is the last thing on his mind.
“And Aaron (Dingle, Danny Miller), well, we both know he’s going to hate me when he finds out what we’re up to.”
During her rant, Cain could be seen trying to call his sister, while Paddy was sorting out Chas’s dress for the funeral and a grieving Aaron sat alone.
Fans were quick to blast Chas and the storyline following her selfish decision.
Twitter user @darciebean wrote: “I’ve pretty much watched Emmerdale all my life but I can honestly say that if #Emmerdale doesn’t get rid of Chas soon I’m going to have to stop watching. What a vile character she’s become.”
