Artificial Intelligence risks ‘destabilising the world order’, the deputy prime minister has warned the UN.
Oliver Dowden said governments are in a race against time as global regulation is failing to keep pace with the technology.
He was addressing the UN General Assembly in a speech on the topic ahead of the UK hosting an AI summit this autumn.
Speaking in New York last night, Mr Dowden called for a ‘new form of multilateralism’ to manage the fast-developing technology.
He said: ‘In the past, leaders have responded to scientific and technological developments with retrospective regulation.

Mr Dowden suggested the international community must have some control over AI from tech firms
‘But in this instance the necessary guardrails, regulation and governance must be developed in a parallel process with the technological progress. Yet, at the moment, global regulation is falling behind current advances.’
Mr Dowden suggested the international community must have some control over AI from tech firms.
‘Because tech companies and non-state actors often have country-sized influence and prominence in AI, this challenge requires a new form of multilateralism,’ he said.
He stressed that AI will be a tool for both good and ill and highlighted its potential in areas such as medicine and fighting climate change. Britain will host an AI safety summit in November, attended by world leaders and tech chiefs.
