A ‘car-obsessed’ driver who reversed a vehicle into a Taser-wielding police officer while trying to escape has been jailed for 64 weeks.

Ashley Carl Bennett, 22, from Wrexham, Wales, faced Mold Crown Court and sentenced to 64 weeks in jail.

Bennett, who was already a banned driver, admitted to five offences including dangerous driving, disqualified driving, assaulting a police officer as an emergency worker, failing to stop and no insurance, North Wales Live reported.

Dramatic dashcam footage, from the incident back in May, shows another police car chasing a black BMW on Wrexham by-pass.

The pursuing officer can be heard calling the risk as medium as it follows the speeding vehicle.

But just moments later the car changes lanes into oncoming traffic prompting the officer to call off the now ‘high risk’ chase.

The BMW can be seen spinning out of control and crashing, leaving the driver and passenger stunned and the pursuing officer time to get out of the car and aim a taser at the suspects.

The officer moves to the driver door, which is then put into reverse by the driver momentarily trapping the officer as the driver and passenger get away on foot.

The officer was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

Bennett can be seen jumping out of the car before escaping the scene on foot (right). He handed himself into police three days after the incident, where during the interview he admitted panicked because he was a banned driver

Bennett handed himself into police three days after the incident, where during the interview he admitted panicked because he was a banned driver.

He was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to the officer and banned from driving for four years and 32 weeks.

Alun Williams, defending, told the court ‘car obsessed’ Bennett’s time in remand had a profound effect on him and had no intention of going back after serving his sentence, the publication reported.
