Emergency services said the 26-year-old driver of one of the trains was killed – while three of the injured are in serious condition.

One passenger, who gave her name as Laura, told reporters: "I noticed that the light went out suddenly, I hit myself very hard in the head – but luckily I'm fine."

Another woman on board one of the trains said most of the passengers had managed to get off by themselves.

The collision happened on the R4 Rodalies line between St Vicenc Castellet and Manresa at around 6:30pm local time .

An investigation has been launched although initial reports suggest there may have been a signal failure.

Train operator RENFE expressed its condolences to the victims in a social media post.

A fleet of two dozen ambulances rushed to the scene – together with fire crews, engineers and the police.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on Twitter: "Love and support for the families of the deceased and wounded."
