Boris’s hero welcome in Ukraine: Ex-PM is mobbed by cheering fans as he receives honorary doctorate in Lviv to go with walk-of-fame-style flagstone he got last year for his support of the country following Russia’s invasion

Boris Johnson received a hero’s welcome as he returned to Ukraine with crowds lining the street and rapturous choirs serenading him.

The former Prime Minister is a cult figure in the war-torn nation, feted for his steadfast support of its fight to repel Russia’s brutal invasion.

And this popularity is evident from the moment he steps from his car – as cheers greet the politician as they spot him leaving.

They clap him as he walks through the city centre, while a child evades his bodyguards to hand him a small flag.

As he is mobbed on either side one well wisher tries to shake his hand and others film his progress through the pack.

It came as Mr Johnson received yet another award in the country he has championed.

Mr Johnson was shown donning a cap and robes as he accepted the title of Doctor Honoris Causa

Cheers greeted the politician as crowds spotted him stepping out of his car alongside a set of burly bodyguards

At a ceremony in Lviv, the former Prime Minister was given a doctorate by the city’s Ivan Franko National University.

Mr Johnson was shown donning a cap and robes – and holding a bunch of flowers – as he accepted the honorary title of ‘Doctor Honoris Causa’ from the university.

In further footage the former Conservatives leader earned cheers and whoops as he waved to fans in the centre of Lviv.

As they clapped, he returned with a rallying cry of: ‘Glory to Ukraine!’

He waves to the crowds and poses for a photo – while one Ukranian voice can be heard shouting: ‘We like you so much!’ 

In a third clip Mr Johnson – wearing a grey suit and bright green tie – walks down a packed staircase as citizens of the under-threat nation serenade him with a bracing tune.

Many wearing traditional dress, the group attempt to catch selfies of him as he passes through the pack and one appears to get his autograph.

He already holds the country’s highest award for foreign nationals – the Ukrainian ‘Order of Liberty’ which he received on his final visit to Kyiv before he stood down as PM last year.

Boris Johnson is also an honorary citizen of Kyiv and of Odesa

The medal was presented to Mr Johnson last August in a ceremony led by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

And that ceremony, he was honoured with his own Hollywood walk-of-fame style flagstone – a commemorative plaque bearing his name and inset into the Ukrainian capital’s pavement.

At the time, Mr Johnson accepted the honours by reiterating his unwavering support for Ukraine’s struggle against Vladimir Putin’s aggression.

He has subsequently been made an ‘honorary citizen of Kyiv’ to add to the same title he holds for the port city of Odesa.
