Brits are set to bask in warmer weather as the first real taste of spring covers the country – with temperatures expected to hit 18C this weekend.

Meteorologist Jim Dale is predicting highs, with the south east coast experiencing the warmest temperatures due to warmer air from the Continent.

Mr Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, said: "It is starting to feel like spring and summer and it probably will start to look like that.

"There is a slight difference of where that centre will be but we are looking at between 17C to 18C, or maybe even 19C – but it might be a slightly colder start at 13C to 14C.

"There's a lot of dry weather coming, it'll be like a sumo-summer if you like."

According to weather charts, the mercury will start its upward trajectory as the week continues, with temperatures lingering in double-digits near to the end of the week.

London and south eastern counties such as Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent and Sussex are set to see highs of 14C during the day with a colder setting at dusk.

But Mr Dale added that while temperatures will move in the right direction, there will still be a "mixed" period after Easter where varying conditions will be felt across the nation.

He said: "There will be a mixed period but afterwards it will remain mostly dry. Possibly some light rain and drizzle across western areas on Sunday, these conditions being most likely in the far northwest.

"Remaining dry elsewhere, though with a small chance of isolated light showers in the south," adding: "Temperatures around average or slightly above, with light winds, but with winds strengthening in the northwest, feeling cooler as a result."

The forecast predicts dry, settled condition from mid-April, most likely in southern and eastern parts, with winds most likely to be light.

However, it warns of "more in the way of cloudy conditions, presenting a greater chance of wet and windier weather. During this period, temperatures are most likely to be close to average or slightly above."

And as the nation edges closer to May – one of the warmer months of the year – the Met Office says its confidence remains lower.
