Chippy is fined nearly £5,000 after locals complained of ‘rancid’ and ‘filthy’ smell of cooking oil when workers fried fish and chips
- A fish and chip shop has been forced to pay almost £5k in fines due to its smell
- Locals complained of the ‘rancid’ oil stench and the chippy was told to improve
A fish and chip shop has been forced to pay almost £5000 in fines due to the ‘rancid and filthy’ smell of cooking oil that allegedly hangs over the shop due to extraction fan issues.
Ocean’s Eleven in Farnham, Surrey has been under fire from locals for years who claim that the chippy’s stench has been overpowering the area and spoiling events like the Queen’s Jubilee.
Chief amongst residents’ concerns was the excessive pong that came from the cooking of the fish – including the grease and oil.
In fact, so strong is the shop’s odour, council bosses have been formally asking the business to improve for years.
After failing to do so they were taken to court in April last year followed by a second prosecution last month.
Ocean’s 11 have been fined almost £5000 for their smell issues
The council had previously told the take away they need to improve their smell
Last April, the owner was slapped with a £1,100 fine, £1,006 in court costs along with a £110 victim surcharge.
On 18 January this year, the owner was hit with another £2,000 fine and ordered to pay costs of £515 with another £200 victim surcharge.
The total fine came to £4,931.
The fish and chip shop – which changed hands at the end of last year – is working with the council to upgrade the kitchen extraction system.
A spokesman for Waverley Borough Council confirmed issues related to the excessive smells were down to the cooking of fish along with chip oil and grease.
Councillor Andy MacLeod said: “Our officers work extremely hard to try and resolve issues with business owners before resorting to prosecution.
“But, in this case, there was no improvement and, as a council, we have to consider how the rest of the community is affected.
“I hope that this action will help those living and working in the area and serve as a reminder to food business owners that they must consider their neighbours as the council will not hesitate to prosecute people and businesses who are causing a similar nuisance.”
