Cops praised after using SUV to sideswipe and save woman firing a gun in the air and holding it to her head in middle of busy Long Island intersection

Long Island cops are being praised on social media after one used a police SUV to sideswipe and knockdown a woman who’d been firing a gun in the air at an intersection before putting it to her head.

The incident was called in at about 2:20 p.m. in the Long Island suburb of North Bellmore, a spokesperson for Nassau County police told DailyMail.com

A 33-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, was firing a semi-automatic pistol into the air and pointing it at oncoming vehicles.

The owner of a nearby gas station was recording the meltdown, as the woman began to point the pistol towards her head.

As the woman points the gun at her skull, a police SUV makes a hard turn toward her and knocks her to the street before she can get away.

The front right bumper of the police SUV hits her legs and she collapses on the road, as officers begin to surround her and take her in to custody.  

The woman was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital, according to Newsday.

The officer driving the SUV that struck her was also sent to a hospital for a check-up on emotional trauma, authorities said. 

The investigation is ongoing, with the woman described as ‘in custody’ but not yet charged with a crime.

No mention was made of any charges against the officer driving the SUV, with Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder praising the cop.

‘I am never going to Monday morning quarterback my cops,’ he said. 

‘The protocol in the police department is that deadly physical forces versus deadly physical force. That’s the law,’ Ryder said.

Ryder added the officers on foot ‘faced down deadly physical force against civilians and themselves, and they used the vehicle to stop that threat. The other option on the table is to take out the gun and shoot it. They didn’t do that.’

‘They chose an alternative option … and probably save people’s lives, including their own.’

Social media users were also full of praise for the unnamed officer.

‘Brave extreme measure that most likely saved her life. Well done,’ wrote one Twitter account.

‘Pretty sure that was done because she was holding the firearm to her head,’ wrote another. ‘Immediate action necessary.’ 

‘Amazing actually,’ added Sydnee Taylor. ‘Non lethal takedown. And no one got hurt critically. Looks like her foot may be broken but yeah. They saved lives, to include hers.’

The scene was located near a children’s readiness center that was in use that day, but school officials said the kids had already been dismissed.
