Could Kamala Harris become President of the US?

As a natural-born American citizen, Harris is eligible to serve as President of the United States as well as Vice President.

Multiple fact-checkers, including AP, PolitiFact and Snopes indeed confirmed that she was born and raised in Oakland.

Under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, she is qualified to fill the roles.

She would become the first female President if she was required to step into the position.

When was she picked as Joe Biden’s Vice President?

Biden announced Harris as his running mate on August 11, 2020.

An Instagram photo shared by Biden showed the moment he video-called Harris and asked her to be his vice president.

"I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris – a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants – as my running mate," the post read.

"Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau.

"I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse."

"I was proud then, and I'm proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign," Biden ended.

Lawmaker Beau Biden was Biden's son. He died of brain cancer in 2015.

Accompanying the post is a photo of Joe Biden on a video call with a smiling Harris as they discuss the news.

Who said Kamala’s family owned slaves in Jamaica?

In June and July 2019, social media users shared reports that claimed one of Harris's ancestors was a slave owner in Jamaica.

The slave owner claim intensified after Donald Trump Jr tweeted that Harris wasn't African-American but indeed half Indian and half Jamaican.

Right-leaning website Big League Politics posted what it claimed were the names of Harris's ancestors alongside a message that read:

"Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris is descended from Irish slave owner Hamilton Brown, the namesake of Brown’s Town in Jamaica, who recruited massive numbers of Irish migrants to Jamaica to work on his sugar plantations after the British empire abolished slavery.”

Other right-leaning blogs and websites posted similar reports.

Fact-checking resource Snopes published that they were "unable to verify that a line of descent exists between the modern-day Harris family and the 19th-century slave owner."

"As such, the claim that an ancestor of Sen. Harris owned slaves in Jamaica remains unproven."

Many thought Harris labeled Biden a racist after the pair squared off in a primary debate.

The exchange came after Biden boasted about being able to work with senators he disagreed with, including ones who supported segregation.

Harris, 55, did not call Biden, 77, racist and even stated before she made the remarks in question that she doesn’t think he’s racist.

“I do not believe you are a racist, and I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground," she said.

“But I also believe, and it's personal, and it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who (have) built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country."

Who is Kamala married to?

Douglas Emhoff, 55, is the Harris's husband.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to California as a teenager.

Like his wife, he is also a lawyer.

Emhoff is currently a California attorney and partner at the firm DLA Piper, where he works based out of Los Angeles and Washington, DC.

Emhoff’s Twitter bio describes himself as a “dad, (Harris) hubby, lawyer, wannabe golfer, advocate for justice and equality".

The couple reportedly met on a blind date after a set up by a close friend of Harris.
