Traffic wardens reached a new low as they slapped a £60 parking fine on a car which had been involved in the crash.

The vehicle, seen with its windscreen smashed, was handed the penalty because it was stopped on double yellow lines In Manchester city centre on Tuesday.

Just a few feet away from them stands a policeman who attempts to divert traffic.

The incident stands out in a crowded list of bizarre incidents involving double yellow lines over the summer.

In June, a car was lifted by a tow truck before yellow lines appeared to be painted underneath in Norwood, south London – with the furious driver saying he was then fined for ‘parking illegally’. 

Bus driver James Dee, 43, says he drove to work as usual, parking his red Vauxhall Zafira before starting his shift at a nearby bus depot. 

He insists that there were no lines or restrictions on the road when he parked. 

But when he returned to his vehicle that evening on Beadman Street, he was baffled to find it facing the opposite direction with double yellow lines under his back wheel – and a parking ticket attached to it.

CCTV published in The Sun newspaper last night appears to show how the incident unfolded.

‘I couldn’t believe it. Not only did the council move my car to paint the lines, they then had the cheek to slap on a parking ticket, which I’m having to appeal,’ Mr Dee told The Sun. 

‘I’m absolutely fuming, I’m not paying a penny.

‘Where I’d left my car there were no lines whatsoever, but when I came back that night at about 8.30pm, my car was facing the opposite way to how I parked it, there were double yellow lines underneath my back wheel, and a ticket in my window.’ 

Meanwhile, in July, Edinburgh locals were left baffled after tiny double yellow lines – measuring just 30cm long were painted on their residential road when a council installed a new cycle path.

Construction to create a west-east-cycle path around Melville Street and Manor Place in Edinburgh began back in February 2022 to improve cycling routes throughout the city.

Now the roadworks appear to have been completed, transforming the area to have a one-way segregated cycleway on each side, adding a pavement and benches where the two roads meet.

But residents are confused why there is plenty of space to park for permit holders other than a 12 inch stretch outside St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral on Manor Place where cars cannot park.

Speaking about the tiny road markings, nearby resident Jamie, said: ‘It’s just bizarre But before this very expensive cycle path was here it was a straight road, this whole area was double yellow lined.

‘I don’t think the council got round to removing the old markings but it’s just ridiculous.’
