Mayor Bill de Blasio is driven to a gym several times a week, but a low-level city worker is paying a $1,000 fine for making just two trips in a city vehicle to his own workouts.
It’s illegal for city workers to use government property for personal reasons.
It’s not illegal for the mayor to get taken from Gracie Mansion to the Park Slope Y on a regular basis since he’s an elected official with police security.
Anthony Salamone, a 15-year driver for the Department of Consumer Affairs, learned that costly lesson after admitting he took a city-owned truck to get to his gym on Nov. 4 and Nov. 10, 2016, according to the Conflicts of Interest Board.
On both days, he was assigned to pick up donated art supplies for delivery to school kids and nonprofits.
The Board said it imposed the $1,000 fine “after considering prior cases in which public servants used a city vehicle for personal trips.”
Salamone earned $58,711 last year. He has been with the agency since 2003.
He could not immediately be reached for comment.
