Disabled mum's 'horrendous pain' at finding dog walker son John Hackett dead after 'being beaten by gang of schoolkids' | The Sun

A DISABLED mum is today in "horrendous pain" after finding her son dead following a vicious attack.

John Hackett, 36, died in Nuneaton on Wednesday morning after an alleged altercation with a gang of youths the night before.

A schoolgirl and two boys were arrested on suspicion of murder and have since been released on bail.

Mr Hackett's horrified mum Christine Smith, 58, found him at the top of the stairs after he collapsed at the home they shared.

Locals said Mr Hackett was out walking his dogs in Snowhill Recreation Ground when the horror attack unfolded on Tuesday evening.

The brutal assault was apparently filmed, before an injured Mr Hackett fought to get himself home.

Her brother David Hambridge, 54, Mr Hackett's uncle, told MailOnline the family's lives have been "turned upside down".

He added: "We are absolutely gutted. We are in horrendous pain."

He said Mr Hackett devoted his life to his mum, never marrying or having kids but instead caring for his disabled parent.

"She is absolutely distraught, she has lost her son, her best friend, and her carer," he added.

Mr Hackett was found dead hours after complaining he was attacked while walking his two dogs – a small brown mongrel and white Pitbull type, according to his uncle.

He had staggered home and called the police before collapsing at the top of the stairs at 5am, Mr Hambridge added.

One neighbour told The Sun Online: “He helped care for his mum, she’ll be devastated without him and I don’t know how she’ll manage.

"I want to know she’s OK but she’s not been at home and police at the cordon won’t tell me anything.

“What’s happened is terrible and has really shaken up the community.”

Detective Inspector Collette O’Keefe today said: “Enquiries are ongoing and residents can expect to continue to see an increased police presence in the area.

“I would like to take this chance to reiterate that we believe this was an isolated incident and there is no risk to the wider public.

“We would also like to remind residents that attempting to share the names of the youths is a criminal offence.

“We are also aware of footage of the altercation being shared on social media and we would ask people to refrain from sharing it.

“Attempting to name the youths or sharing a video can ultimately harm the investigation.”

Warwickshire Police said an altercation broke out at the sports ground around 6.15pm on Tuesday.

Police are now urging witnesses, or people with footage of any form, to come forward.
