Elon Musk says Apple threatens to take Twitter off App Store but ‘won’t say why’

Tech giant Apple is threatening to remove the social media app from its App Store but won't say why, according to Elon Musk.

The billionaire Twitter owner revealed the news with a confused tweet on the platform earlier today (November 28).

And it comes on the same day that Apple also pulled all of its advertising from the site.

Musk tweeted: “Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won’t tell us why.”

He then began tweeting about the company after the news of it essentially boycotting Twitter.

In a series of Tweets, he wrote: “Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter.

“Do they hate free speech in America?

“Did you know Apple puts a secret 30% tax on everything you buy through their App Store?

“Apple should publish all censorship actions it has taken that affect its customers.”

He also tweeted Apple boss Tim Cook to ask him what was going on.

No response was given, but the Daily Star has reached out to Apple for a comment.

The news of issues with Apple comes a few days after Musk claimed he was going to make an “alternative” to the iPhone.

Yoel Roth, the former head of trust and safety at Twitter, said on Friday that app stores represented the "most significant check on unrestrained free speech on the mainstream internet".

He wrote: "Failure to adhere to Apple’s and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to get Twitter’s services.

"This gives Apple and Google enormous power to shape the decisions Twitter makes."

There is also the issue of Phil Schiller, a senior Apple executive who runs the company’s App Store.

Prior to Musk's £37billion takeover of Twitter, Schiller boasted an account with over 200,000 followers.

Schiller then deleted his account when Musk took charge of the social media site.
