Does Emily Maitlis suspect King Charles wasn’t surprised when his brother Andrew’s royal career was ended by her Newsnight interview with him? Whispers Emily: ‘A good friend of Charles said, ‘Don’t worry, you won’t be put in the Tower’. I think they may have thought I had done what had to be done.’ Deep waters.

The description on the Queen’s death certificate that she died of old age has been queried by Manchester pathologist Dr Anthony Barson, who describes it as ‘either an admission of ignorance or a means of keeping a known fatal condition private’. 

‘We’re left wondering why the Queen did not die sooner or live longer,’ he claims. ‘If the cause of death is genuinely unknown, then a death from an unnatural cause cannot be excluded. The matter should be referred to a coroner.’

So much for the ‘cleverest boy at Eton’ tag. Kwasi Kwarteng tells LBC listeners that the monarchy has ‘got the Civil List’, a deal dating back to George III’s reign. As Chancellor, he is one of the three Royal Trustees responsible for the monarch’s finances and should have known that fellow Old Etonian David Cameron scrapped the Civil List in 2011 and came up with the Sovereign Grant instead. Pegged to Crown Estate revenues rather than a fixed rate, it has also proved very much more lucrative for the royals. Meddle with that at your peril, Kwasi!
