PLUMMETING temperatures and freezing conditions could mean snow will fall within DAYS, the Met Office has said.

Brits are bracing for more travel chaos after severe "danger to life" weather warnings were put in place across parts of the country this week.

Heavy overnight rain led to warnings of flooding today with cars stuck in floods.

And according to the Met, from Sunday to Tuesday the UK will see a rather "cold and unsettled period", adding: "Northern hills and mountains will see snow at times."

And more snow is expected in the coming weeks, with the UK long range weather forecast warning that from December 2 to December 16: "There is a chance that low pressure systems will run to the south of the UK, at least for a time, whilst northern areas remain drier, allowing colder air to become more established further north.

"This scenario would increase the chance of snow across central areas, with perhaps wintry showers in parts of the north."

Meanwhile, the Met Office have put yellow rain warnings in place until 6pm today across the east of Scotland and the north-east of England.

Flooding has led to school closures and disruption on roads and railways as heavy rain drenched some areas, with an amber rain warning also in place for north-east Scotland until 3pm today.

The severe weather has led to warnings of fast-flowing or deep floodwater likely "causing danger to life".

But the rest of this week will continue to be marked with wet and wild weather.

Over six inches of rain has already fallen over the last 48 hours, and authorities have said more travel chaos could be expected.

There were 20 flood warnings and nine flood alerts in place on Friday morning.

People living in regions with flood warnings have been urged to plan any journeys and keep themselves safe.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said amber warning areas would experience severe weather and flooding, while coastal areas would also be battered by strong winds.

"With this kind of rainfall, we are expecting some flooding," he said. "We have very strong onshore winds and very large waves.

"There may be some disruption to transport, including ferries and the road network."

Temperatures, meanwhile, would be more typical for this time of year, hovering around 9C to 11C for much of the nation.

And England fans could expect unsettled weather during the team's first World Cup match against Iran on Monday.

"There is more uncertainty than usual after Sunday," Mr Morgan said.

"It will probably be pretty unsettled, with some rain at times and possibly quite windy as well."

Transport minister Jenny Gilruth said: "The Met Office is warning us to expect a period of difficult weather in parts of eastern Scotland throughout Friday, with heavy rain likely to impact travel in the amber warning area in the north-east.

"The conditions could potentially bring disruption to the transport network, so it's important people plan their journeys before they set off – particularly if they're looking to use the trunk roads or travel by rail."
