Family fight at home over Thanksgiving holiday weekend turns deadly

A 23-year-old woman is facing charges after her 63-year-old relative died during a family fight at a Massachusetts home over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, authorities said.

Modesta Gomez is expected to appear Monday before a judge in Lawrence District Court on charges of assault and battery on a person over 60 and assault and battery following a domestic dispute that turned deadly late Sunday at the Bicknell Avenue home in Methuen, according to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, a spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney’s Office.

Officers were called to the home after receiving reports of a fight and an unresponsive woman. They soon found Martina Gomez, who “appeared to suffer from medical distress” while trying to break up the family brawl, Kimball-Monahan wrote in an email to The Post.

The woman was rushed to Lawrence General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday to determine a cause of death.

Details on what immediately preceded the incident, as well as the exact relationship between the two women, were unclear.

The incident remains under investigation by the Essex District Attorney’s Office, the Essex State Police Detective Unit and Methuen police, Kimball-Monahan said.
