A FAMOUS UK tourist attraction has been destroyed with a huge hole left in the walls of the 800-year-old monument.
The unknown vandal is believed to have climbed up Dolbadarn Castle in Llanberis, North Wales, to smash stonework from its round tower.
There is now a gap in the wall where the stone was pounded with a hammer and dropped into the ditch below.
North Wales Police are investigating the crime at the site which is managed by Welsh heritage body Cadw.
PCSO Rhys Evans said: "Unbelievably somebody is reported to have climbed up to the top with a hammer and smashed part of the round tower.
"This beautiful monument, which dates back to the 12th or early 13th century, is part of our heritage and should be respected."

PCSO Evans said officers were reviewing CCTV footage which appeared to show the attack.
He said: "The incident has been recorded and that footage is currently being reviewed.
"I am asking anyone who visited the site during July and who might have seen anything suspicious, or anyone with information, to get in touch."
The castle is believed to have been built as early as the 1220s by former Prince of Wales Llywelyn the Great and overlooks the Llyn Padarn beauty spot lake.
