Education courses have seen a last-minute surge in popularity but society, culture and health remain Victoria’s most popular university paths.

Almost 43,000 year 12 graduates will receive first-round offers at universities, TAFEs and colleges on Thursday – 2334 more than last year’s December round.

Society and culture courses make up 19.75 per cent of first-round offers, slightly down on last year’s popularity.

Health saw the largest increase, accounting for 17.62 per cent of all offers. Management and commerce courses were the third favourite, with 15.72 per cent of first-round offers.

Growth in Victorian teacher education courses is strong, with 1463 teaching offers made on Thursday – up 8.05 per cent from this time last year.

The increase comes after the state government announced a $229 million package to address the teacher shortage by enticing more people into the secondary-school system.

The subsidies, which include coverage for cost of living, amount to $18,000 to those studying a four-year undergraduate program or $9000 for two years of a postgraduate study if they commit to teaching in state secondary schools for at least two years. Offers for education courses comprise 4.1 per cent of all offers made on Thursday.

Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) chief executive officer Teresa Tjia said the majority of school-leavers had secured their most-wanted courses, with four out of five students offered their first or second preference.

Offer advice is available online at vtac.edu.au from 2pm. Those who didn’t receive an offer or who have changed their mind about study options can change their preferences up to 4pm on Friday.

VTAC will release the next round of offers on January 12 and further offers throughout January and February.

Offers in the new year will be made to year 12 students and mature age applicants for all courses including those not participating in Thursday’s release, such as some biomedical science and medicine courses.

Offers will also be made to students whose results were not available in time for Thursday’s offer round, including those studying the International Baccalaureate and some interstate students.
