Former IDF soldier says ‘I hope Netanyahu is sent to jail’ as anger grows

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be “sent to jail”, a former IDF soldier tells Daily Express US, amid an ongoing corruption investigation into the Israeli leader.

The leader of the right-wing Likud Party has been accused of bribery, fraud and breach of trust – allegations he denies.

Among the allegations, it is alleged Mr Netanyahu and the controlling shareholder of Israel’s Bezeq telecom giant exchanged regulatory favours for positive media coverage of the Israeli government.

Mr Netanyahu is also alleged to have received gifts from Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and other wealthy figures.

The corruption trial resumed earlier this month, and he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in jail.

Nadav Weiman, a former IDF sniper who now campaigns against Israeli occupation with Breaking the Silence, says Mr Netanyahu will “hopefully be sent to jail.”

He also condemned the Israeli Prime Minister’s failings that led to the October 7 terror attack perpetrated by Hamas, killing 1,200 civilians.

Mr Weiman said: “Two main conceptions broke down on October 7. First, was the idea that Israel could manage the conflict. Netanyahu was the leader of that conception.

“The other thing was the fact that Israel has a superiority in military infrastructure. This didn’t protect Israelis, he is the head of the state and is responsible for the people who were murdered and raped on October 7.

“He should have resigned on the same day.

“As for the corruption trial, he will throw Israel under the bus to avoid the trial. Hopefully, he will be sent to jail if he is found guilty of everything he did.”

Breaking the Silence is an organisation comprised of former IDF personnel sharing their experiences from their time serving in the military.

The organisation has been a vocal critic of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, where over 18,000 people have been killed.

Mr Weiman added that Israel should be supportive of a Palestinian state being formed to prevent further violence in the future.

He said: “Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is the most extreme right-wing government we have ever had.

“The right-wing in Israel is expanding settlements, using everything in their power to stop a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu said a few days ago that without him there will be a Palestinian state, and that he is the only person stopping this.

I think a Palestinian state is in the interest of Israel, but aside from that, we are not the UN. We don’t get to choose who gets independence.

We control everything, not understanding that on the other side, there are human beings with families and life. That is the problem, they don’t see other human beings as equal to them.
