Four people were killed and 16 injured after a tourist bus plunged more than 300ft off the side of a cliff.

The coach was transporting 20 people on a section of Peru's Cusco-Quillabamba road network on Monday night (August 22) when the horrific tragedy transpired.

Along with the driver, there were also two Peruvians on the bus and 17 people from other countries.

According to Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez, the crash was caused by foggy weather conditions, with the driver losing control on a return trip from Machu Picchu – the famous 15th-century Inca citadel in the Andes Mountains.

It has been reported that the bus plummeted approximately 328ft into a mountain chasm, with one Peruvian and three Colombian citizens losing their lives.

Treatment, meanwhile, was given to those injured in the crash at two medical facilities in the nearby city of Cusco.

At least one other person is still in intensive care, according to People Magazine, who also reported that a number of the injured tourists had been discharged.

Tourists from other countries such as Israel, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Greece and Argentina were on the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The National Police of Peru are now believed to be investigating the incident, which is the second of its kind after a minibus drove into a ravine in Junin province last month and traffic collisions in the country remain common with poor road surfaces, a lack of road signs, speeding and poor enforcement by authorities all contributing to the problem.

About 5,000 tourists visit Machu Picchu every day and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

In 2007, meanwhile, it was declared as one of the 'New Seven Wonders of the World' in a worldwide internet poll that attracted more than 100million votes.

Other sites to make that list were The Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, Rio's Christ the Redeemer statue, Rome's Colosseum, Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid and the Jordanian city of Petra.
