  •  A Hindi adaptation of the BBC show The Night Manager has been announced
  • Popular BBC shows like Luther and Criminal Justice have already been remade

Several British TV programmes will get a Bollywood makeover after a remake of the beloved BBC spy drama The Night Manager airs this month.

The Hindi remake, starring Indian actor Aditya Roy Kapur, follows the journey of former soldier Jonathan as he works as a night manager at a hotel and tries take down an illegal arm’s dealer.

The show will air on Disney+ Hotstar.

Speaking to IndiaOutlook, Kapur said the show had allowed him to explore his acting range in ways he hadn’t before.

He said: ”It’s a dream part for an actor to have a character that has so many shades to it.

The original cast of The Night Manager included Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie

The show has been remade for an Indian audience and will air this year

‘Another thing that attracted me to the project was the tone of the show, it isn’t necessarily something that I’ve gotten a chance to explore in Hindi cinema so far.’

It is one of several UK dramas – including Doctor Foster, Luther, Criminal Justice and Ludo – that have been or are set to be remade for Indian audiences.

Industry analysts allege the projects come amid a ‘demand’ in India for ‘high-quality TV dramas.’

Speaking to The Times, Rajinder Dudrah, professor of cultural studies at Birmingham City University claimed the days of India borrowing entertainment for the West were on the way out.

He explained: ‘Now there is a more professional attitude. Things are being co-funded with teams in India, the UK or America.’

As well as the Night Manager, Indian television audiences have been treated to a whole host of other adaptations of popular British programs.

These include BBC Studios India’s remake of Idris Elba’s Luther, which transformed into Rudra: The Edge of Darkness.

Acclaimed BBC series Luther which starred Idris Elba has been remade as Rudra: The Edge of Darkness starring Ajay Devgn for Indian audiences

The series, which was released to critical acclaim last year starred Bollywood sensation Ajay Devgn, 53 in the lead role.

There have also been remakes of classic BBC 1 drama Doctor Foster which starred Suranne Jones in the UK.

This became Out of Love in India and aired for ten episodes in the country until May 2021.

Indian audiences have also been treated to a remake of the BBC’s Criminal Justice – the 2008 crime drama that launched the career of Paddington and James Bond star Ben Whishaw.
