FIRST Lady Jill Biden has made her mark on the education system over her decades as a teacher.

However, Jill has received criticism for pursuing furthering her own education.

Who is Jill Biden?

Jill Biden made history when her husband, President Joe Biden, took office by becoming the first woman with a day job.

When her husband took office, Jill was adamant that she would continue working while holding the position.

Her decision garnered both criticism and support, but Jill said it was never her intent to make a statement. She just enjoys teaching.

She recalled in her 2019 memoir, Where the Light Enters, that she told her husband, “I just wanted to do the thing I love best."

Her husband’s response: “Of course you should.”

In the classroom, Jill is known simply as Ms. B and likes to separate her professional teaching life from that of the wife of a politician.

If her students ask if she is Joe Biden's wife, she tells them she's a relative.

"Or if I get pushed I say, ‘You know, I’m your English teacher,’” she told NPR in 2013.

“That’s who I want to be. I want to be Dr. B, their English teacher, and I think they like that, quite frankly.”

What kind of doctor is Jill?

Jill Biden has been a lifelong educator, going on to earn her Doctorate of Education in educational leadership from the University of Delaware.

She has been open about preferring to be referred to by her doctorate title, but she has faced criticism for her decision.

In an op-ed article published by The Wall Street Journal, the author, Joseph Epstein, called on Jill Biden to remove Dr from her title.

"Madame First Lady—Mrs. Biden—Jill—kiddo: a bit of advice on what may seem like a small but I think is a not unimportant matter. Any chance you might drop the “Dr.” before your name?" he wrote.

He continued: "A wise man once said that no one should call himself Dr unless he has delivered a child. Think about it, Dr. Jill, and forthwith drop the doc."

Jill Biden spoke out against the comments, garnering support from other women who argued that a woman's success should not be swept under the rug.

“That was such a surprise," Jill said on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in December 2020.

"It was really the tone of it that I think that — you know, he called me kiddo."

"And one of the things I'm most proud of is my doctorate," she said. "I mean I worked so hard for it."

She wrote her dissertation on community college student retention, asking what steps colleges can take to improve it.

Does Joe and Jill Biden have children?

The couple has a daughter named Ashley, born in 1981. She also became stepmother to Joe’s two young sons from his first marriage, Beau and Hunter, after their mother and baby sister died in a car accident in 1972.

Beau Biden tragically died from brain cancer in 2015.

The couple have been married since 1977 – four years after Joe lost his wife – Neilia and daughter, Naomi in a tragic car accident.

Joe and Jill had an affair that broke up Jill's first marriage, her first husband has claimed.

Jill's ex-husband Bill Stevenson, 72, told the Daily Mail that the story the presidential candidate tells about how he fell in love with his wife after a blind date is a lie.

Joe has said he called up Jill to ask her on a date after seeing her picture in an advertisement and learning his brother Frank knew her.

Stevenson revealed that he will be publishing a book that will "blow the lid off the sham story."

“I genuinely don't want to harm Jill's chances of becoming First Lady," said Stevenson.

"She would make an excellent First Lady — but this is my story."

He added: “It's not a bitter book — I'm not bitter because, if it wasn't for my divorce, I would never have met my wife Linda and she's the greatest thing in my life.

"But it does have facts in it that aren't pleasant to Jill and Joe.”

A spokesperson for Jill told The Sun that the breakdown of her first marriage was a very painful time in her life.

"It's a shame that after 45 years, all of a sudden, this is being revisited," they added.
