Thousands of Jaguar Land Rover employees will be sent home this month because of supply chain shortages forcing it to call a halt to production.

The firm – which has major plants at Solihull in the West Midlands, and Halewood, Merseyside, plans to restrict operations from next week until the end of September.

The car giant employs around 40,000 staff and it is not clear how many will be asked to stay at home. But it is understood those affected will continue to be paid.

The company has blamed the crisis on a global shortage of vital semi-conductors, made worse by Covid lockdowns in China where most of them are made.

A spokesman said it had made changes to its production schedule due to ‘supply chain disruptions’.
