CLEVELAND, Ohio — Joe Biden responded in trademark fashion to allegations he would take performance-enhancing drugs and be fed answers through an ear piece at the first presidential debate in Cleveland.
In a tweet just hours before his first face-to-face showdown with President Trump in Ohio on Tuesday evening, the Democratic nominee snapped a photo of a pint of Jeni’s ice cream and a pair of Apple AirPods.
“It’s debate night, so I’ve got my earpiece and performance enhancers ready,” read the tongue-in-cheek tweet from Biden’s account.
The former veep, 77, is a passionate ice cream lover, and the sweet treat has become an odd calling card for Biden, who is frequently seen devouring a cone on the campaign trail.
The photo was also a nod to Ohio-based company Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, whose James Beard Award-winning founder, Jeni Britton Bauer, is a Biden supporter.
The missive was a response to claims from the Trump campaign earlier Tuesday that the septuagenarian had agreed to their request that a third-party check the candidates for electronic transmitters before backing out at the last minute.
Biden’s communications director Kate Bedingfield denied such a thing had ever happened and called the charges a “pathetic” and “weak” distraction.
Last week, President Trump also renewed his calls that his opponent undergo drug screening, suggesting Biden might be taking performance-enhancing substances.
“I will be strongly demanding a Drug Test of Sleepy Joe Biden prior to, or after, the Debate on Tuesday night. Naturally, I will agree to take one also,” the president wrote on Twitter.
The former Delaware senator has been dogged by allegations he does not have the mental stamina to do the top job, and he has repeatedly shunned questions from reporters covering his campaign.
