Kamala Harris fury as Democrat ‘demands staff stand up when she walks into room’

US Election: Kamala Harris may ‘take over’ from Biden says Dale

Ms Harris, the Vice President-elect, is set to enter the White House as America’s first woman, and first black and Asian-American, to hold the post. The California Senator initially ran against President-elect Joe Biden but dropped out of the race before being picked up as his running mate. While Ms Harris has yet to take to her desk in the White House, claims of her running for President in 2024 have already surfaced.

This is largely a result of Mr Biden being 78 years old and considered fit for only one term.

Ms Harris’ politics have been described as centrist, but her voting record has rankled both liberals and conservatives in the Democratic Party.

The politician has been resolute in her career, facing down requests of criminal death penalties in California, as well as opposing the elimination of private health insurance.

Her stoicism and force was conveyed in a 2018 Vogue profile, revealing another side to Ms Harris.

While at her Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, a group of congressional staffers had gathered to meet the “Democratic star”.

The staffers all stood up but for one, who Ms Harris ordered to get to his feet immediately.

Journalist Abby Aguirre wrote: “Harris has an air of celebrity that, under normal circumstances, a freshman senator wouldn’t have had time to acquire.

“But this year has been anything but normal.

“She greets the 20-somethings as though they’re relatives at a family reunion: ‘Hi, everybody! Hi, guys!’

“Then she notices that one of the staffers is still seated, and her voice drops a full octave: ‘Stand up, man!’

“The startled staffer springs to his feet. ‘Kevin,’ he says, extending a hand.

“‘What’s your last name?’ demands Harris.

“‘Thank you!’ She shakes his hand. ‘Kamala Harris.’ (That’s pronounced ‘comma-la,’ by the way, and you’d better get it right.)”

The confident aggressiveness has been a characteristic of Ms Harris’ political prowess.

It is something many note has propelled the politician to the forefront of US politics.

While hoping to win the Democratic nomination for presidency, Ms Harris launched into an intense attack on Mr Biden in the summer of 2019.

At a leadership debate, she brought up Mr Biden’s controversial record on busing and race, describing his work with segregationist lawyers as “hurtful”.

However, despite their differences, some short months later the pair were working closely in order to squash Mr Trump’s campaign for a second term in office.

They are believed to have bonded over Mr Biden’s late son, Beau, whom Ms Harris was a good friend.

Writing in her 2019 memoir, ‘The Truths We Hold: An American Journey’, Ms Harris briefly detailed the strong nature of her friendship to Beau, calling him an “incredible friend and colleague” who became a close collaborator.

Ms Harris wrote: “There were periods, when I was taking heat, that Beau and I talked every day, sometimes multiple times a day.

“We had each other’s back.”

Beau passed away in 2015 from brain cancer.

A year after his death, Ms Harris, while at the California Democratic convention, said that the Biden family “truly represents our nation’s highest ideals, a powerful belief in the nobility of public service”.

She said Mr Biden had “given so much to our country and on top of everything he has accomplished, he gave to us my dear friend Beau”.

After choosing Ms Harris as his running mate, Mr Biden sent an email out to his supporters explaining the decision, and wrote: “They were both Attorneys General at the same time. He had enormous respect for her and her work.

“I thought a lot about that as I made this decision.

“There is no one’s opinion I valued more than Beau’s and I’m proud to have Kamala standing with me on this campaign.”

Shortly after, in a post to Instagram, Mr Biden said: “I have the great honour to announce that I’ve picked Kamala Harris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate.

“Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau.

“I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse; I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.”
