A man who was shot dead outside a police station after infiltrating a secure car park wielding a ‘samurai-like sword’ has been named.
Marius Ciolac, 35, was gunned down on Friday, October 7, after breaching the entrance to the car park of the Ascot Drive police station in Derby and smashing the windows of parked vehicles.
Derbyshire Police also confirmed that the man had smashed a window at the newly built £9.5million police station.
The force said the family of the man, who lived on Osmaston Road, had been informed.
On Saturday, forensic officers were seen searching a house on the same road which backs onto the joint police and fire complex in an ‘unrelated incident’.
But a company named ‘Home Builders & Essential Electric’ was registered by Ciolac in 2020 to the same address being searched.
Police investigators had previously struggled to identify the man who was thought to be a an Eastern European refugee, according to probes by the Telegraph.
An investigation has been launched by the police watchdog, The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is normal procedure in instances such as these.

A neighbour told DerbyshireLive that the man who was living in the house being searched by forensic officers had only moved in during the last few months.
Ciolac was spotted wielding a knife at 9.55am by officers but he was shot dead at 10.03am, the force said.
He was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, in an ambulance but died on arrival. There were no other officers, staff or members of the public injured.
A local resident recalling the incident said the man had a weapon ‘like a samurai sword’, adding: ‘Apparently the intruder was initially Tasered but that didn’t overpower him so they had to shoot.’
The reports of gunfire also forced a nearby B&M store to be evacuated. Meanwhile, Mark Baxter, who works at a nearby motor firm, claims that he heard six shots.
‘I was in reception with my colleague when there was suddenly a series of bangs,’ said the 59-year-old. ‘We looked at each other and knew instantly it wasn’t a car backfiring. There were two sharp blasts, two shots afterwards, a little delay and then two more shots.
‘We went outside and a lot of police officers were there. We saw there was someone on the ground with a guy stood over him with a gun, a police officer with a rifle and then they shut the road off.’

Mr Baxter said a customer told him the suspect was shot in the entrance to the police station.
‘A woman ran out of the police station and said “Do not let anyone past the entrance in any circumstances”. Another person said they saw police pick up a knife from the road.’
