Vladimir Putin has been branded a “modern-day Hitler” whose actions will see Russia doomed to the same fate as Nazi Germany. Oleksiy Danilov, head of Ukraine’s National Security Council, issued his chilling assessment of the Kremlin leader in a rare television interview.
A key member of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle, the top security adviser warned of the growing despotic similarities between Putin and Adolf Hitler.
Mr Danilov explained: “Look, you can’t incite terrorists. Because in the future, their desire to capture, capture and capture once more will only increase. This is a dangerous practice.
“They made an example of fascist Germany. So we have a very good memory. Now Putin is not much different – he is just a modern Hitler.
“From 1941 to 1945, Germany was at war with almost the whole world. In May 1945, it was left in ruins. The same will happen with Russia. They are doomed to it.”
Mr Danilov described the problems of co-existing peacefully with Russia as its neighbour – and blamed the long-term Moscow chief.
But he added: “Firstly, I do not see Putin will be in power for long. He is doing everything to make Russia fall apart. It is Putin who is destroying Russia with his actions.
“Secondly, other countries co-exist with neighbours, and it is not necessary to fight. It is not necessary to clarify relations by military means. And where will the borders be?
“I have said that Chechnya will be free, Tatarstan will be free and many countries will be free. Whether it will happen this year, or next year, or in the near future – let’s see.”
On Sky News, Mr Danilov further accused Russia of “humanitarian terrorism” – referencing Putin’s strategy of targeting energy supplies as Ukraine heads into a biting winter.
He added: “These are the things on which people’s lives depend – the work of hospitals, schools, and the lives of the elderly.”
The top aide also said he did not expect the UK’s support to change under the new leadership of Rishi Sunak, saying: “It will be a continuation of the great help that the people of Great Britain are doing.
“We have a great common cause, and we are aware we are on the side of the light of the whole of Europe and the civilised world.”
On the ground in Ukraine, Russia’s forces continue to struggle. The UK’s Ministry of Defence said: “There have been at least 23 verified losses of its Ka-52 HOKUM attack helicopters.
“This represents over 25 per cent of the Russian Air Force’s in-service fleet.”
